Horseman V2 DLC GC

Post by Horseman »

As stated in my previous post I've decided to start again on version 2 of the DLC so as to better test balance.

Still on Colonel and all rules.

Poznan

DV achieved on turn 11 again.

I made the same purchaes (2xinf, 1xart and 1xPz38) and despite the same turn victory as my 1st play through it defianetly felt harder. I managed not to lose any units this time but at one point I had the Pz38 on 1 str, 1 pzI on 3, 1 Pz1 on 6, 1 inf on 2 and 1 inf on 1.....yes I very nearly lost core units to the Polish counter attack!!! The infantry at 1str was attacked by some cavalry who with some godly intervention managed to totally fluff their attacks!

All in all I'd say this was more fun and forewarned of lesser prstige and the rapid advance on XP I only used elite reinforcements once to preserve a units xp above 100.

Finished with 931 Prestige

Danzig Corridor - 1031 prestige
DV achieved on turn 12...one turn later than 1st play through and I was being more agressive!

I was awarded a SE Infantry in trucks at the start so had 1 extra unit
As before I disbanded the AT unit and this time I also got rid of the recon....they're just not my cup of tea!
Bought a new Pz38, a 10.5cm art and a BF110c
My 7.5cm art is upgraded to 10.5cm and my 2 walking infantry are given trucks.
All my units were bought up to strength but so far I declined to overstrength and I used regular (free!) replacements for most unless it dropped a unit below 100xp and there were only a couple of units in that boat.
After all this I was left with 359 prestige

Well I wouldn't say the mission was much harder than the 1st time around but getting my foot accross the river certainly was. My core got pretty badly shot up and I did lose 1 Aux infantry and the other one was left at 3 str. What made it extra tough was not reinforcing units unless I really had to which ment the last stages of the battle were fought with badly depleted troops.

Finished with 1631 prestige

Lodz - 1781 prestige
DV on turn 13 (last turn) by the skin of my teeth...last attack just did enough to capture final victory hex!

Everyone was reinforced to 10 strength and as I had no additional core slots I spent a bit OS my air, panzers and artillery. 1175 prestige left after this

Kept with the same basic plan - But ouch, activated quite a few of the northern tanks and just held them off (luckily they came 1 or 2 at a time!! Really struggled with time on this one...I almost didn't notice it until turn 11 and only had 2 turns left to finish overunning Lodz as well as the VH in the NE....barely had enough units in range!

Alos lost 2 of the aux units with the other three all being less than half strength at the end and some of my core units took quite a beating too and I ended up using prestige to (in some instances elite) reinforce.

Final Prestige - 1597

Piatek - 1797 prestige
Got myself a DV - it was all over by turn 18 as I captured the last town and destroyed the last Polish unit.

Was awarded a SE Gebirgsjager in trucks, nice.
I purchased a 2nd BF109, not that I really need the fighters yet but the chance to build XP so I have an expeirenced air wing doesn't seem to be a stupid idea. Other than that I reinforced (using more elite replacements now to preserve units above 100&200 xp) and OS every unit. All this left me with 747 prestige.

Well this time round the defence was more intense than the 1st time round. But ultimately the end result was the same, 1st on the far right (those 2 objectives were never threatened) then moving westwards mt forces began to move forward. It has to be said I was almost caught out several times as more Polish units joined the attack...seemed like an almost unliited suply of Polish tanks on the left flank and several core units were badly reduced and lucky to escape destruction. I did lose 2 Auxillary AT units and 1 Artillery unit and have a fairly hefty repair bill for my core....I think this difficulty seems exactly right for this stage in the campaign and this level of play (colonel)

I wonder if the scenario designer ever expected the Germans to capture all the Polish cities?

End prestige - 1503

Kampinoska Forest - prestige 1603

DV in 12 turns....quicker than before but in fairness I didn't waste any time trying to crack Modlin fortress or the units in Warsaw.

First thing I noticed was that there were less auxillary units than before, just to Cavalry infact. Well I decided to try and emulate what I did last tome rtound and purchased a new Bf110C, as new Pz38 and a Sturmpanzer. To accomadate these guys I left my other Bf109 and the two PzIs in reserve. After reinforcing and OS all my units I had 154 prestige left

Well this was way more fun than last time! Though the southern and northern forcers met little more resistence than in version 1 the forces ploughing through the forest felt like they were chipping away at a brick wall with a tooth pick! Awesome! I was going to have another go at Modlin fortress right up to the point that it fired and knocked 6 steps off of a Pz38! At that point I also decided to give Warsaw a wide berth.

A big thumbs up and onto the actual Modlin mission and this time thast fort will fall against my mighty hosts!

Modlin Fortress - prestige=1077

Got a DV on turn 14 but wowser that was hard work!

Used my starting prestige to buy a Pioniere and a Bruckenpioniere (though my plan didn't go as expected so they just pretty much ended up being used as regualr infantry) and left 1 infantry, 2 PzIx and a Bf109 in reserve. After reinforcing and OS my core I was left with 9 prestige!

Whilst the initial resistance was as before things really went wrong as I approached the Fortress...the change form radar staion to actual fort as well as the extra units in the area really gave me a bloody nose. I was bounced left right and centre as the casualties mounted, so many core units had to withdraw to reinforce mid scenario and I lost count of the number of times I sweated as I watched the AI target one of my units only for them to hang on at 1 or 2 steps. I also don't remember the fort firing on the 1st version so was (pleasantly) surprised when it opened up and almost 1 shotted one of my artillery units!
Its a sign of things going right for the AI when I've had to change plans completely leaving my bridgers unable to perform theoir duty of getting me accross a river easily as they take thier plac ein the main battle line! Good job on this one, the Fortress was a tough nut to crack as it should be.

Warsaw North - prestige 1009

DV on turn 17 - 3 turns later and I wasn't going slow!

Was given a SE Gebirgsjager which I disbanded. After reinforcing and OS all units I was left with just enough to purchase another Sturmpanzer. This leaves me with 1 Infantry, 1 Gebirgsjager, 1 Bruckenpioniere and 2 PzIs in reserve. Still quite a hefty back up! This left me with 7 prestige!

The slog through Warsaw was far harder than version 1 though I was still quite comfortable getting the DV. ANd a nice little surprise, 1 of the captured artillery has joined my core! As it has no upgrade sequence it wont save me any prestige long term unless I disband it but on the other hand I can start gaining XP with it so it'll be like buying a green unit with experience - good times!

Enjoyed this mission far more than in V1 - the slugfest through Warsaw was far more tactical, having to swap low ammo/damaged units in and out as I ground forward.

Spoils of war - prestige 2006

DV on turn 14 (same as version 1)

Got awarded another SE Gebirgsjager which I promptly disbanded. Other than that all I did was reinforce and OS all my units leaving me with 1144 prestige

Though it definately felt like there were more Russian units anf the counter attacks kept me on my toes the 1st taking me totally unprepared the mission actually felt easier on version 2...this may have been because everything just went right!

The KV2 actually failed to make any significant impact. Its 1st attack did devastate a full strength Pz38 leaving it at 3 steps and needing to withdraw but after that it fell easily (its second atack was against some infantry in hills leaving it at 4 steps!) One stuka attack, 2 artillery and another Pz38 did the job.

I still love this one as a nice "what if?" and I think I may have just been lucky on this play through. ANd being that I'm on Colonel level maybe the difficulty is about right

Ending prestige - 2015

NOTE: I had more prestige after repairs than I would have done if I skipped this mission and went strait to Norway so definately worth it to me!

EDIT: Forgot to note I did lose 4 Auxillary units

Oslo - 2765 prestige

DV in 10 turns

Got myself a SE PzIIIF and therefore disbanded my SE Gebirgsjager in the hope of a 2nd tank.
Bought 2 Ju88s to start xp farming, all my nfantry and art got half tracks - except the captured polish one, it cant upgrade without changin gthe piece so stays in trucks for now. My SE infantry were upgraded to Grenadiers. Leaving me 8 units in reserve and 140 prestige

This was just as easy as the 1st version, the inclusion of some fighters didn't change anything in the air as they were far to weak to contest control of the skies. Even my repair bill will be nice and small. The Blucher did take more damage (ended up at 7 steps) but that was mainly due to two full turns of naval and air power failing to knock of a single fort step! But even then it was never really close to sinking. Even as the 1st amphibious landing mission my gut instinct says this one is just too easy.

A thought on my inflated core forces - at this level considering my skill level and knowledge of the game system its probably not too much. I've not upgraded too many units, instead choosing to buy new and thus save prestige long term. Someone playing 1st time through would probably have upgraded the panzer Is to the 38s instead of buying new like I did as well as upgrading existing infantry to pionieres and bridgers unlike me. SO all in all they would probably not have such a large core.

Lillehammer - prestige 1740

DV on turn 10

Was given yet another SE Gebirgsjager grrrr when will high command realise I dont want them?! Disbanded. Bought a new fighter and new Stuka to help farm for XP and 2 infantry upgraded to Grenadiers. After reinforcing and OS I'm left with 766 Prestige

This was a lot easier than I remmember on version 1. The British counter attack prety much hit me like a damp squib and was easily brushed aside. Until I start again and play through on Field Marshall I cant say for certain but my gut says the Norway scenarios need a bit of a lift in difficulty. No units lost (though 1 Panzer III got a nastty shock from the Bristish heavy weapons) and fairly light casulties should leave me with a fairly small repair bill.

Well this is as far as I got before V2 came out so devs, if you're listening please please please no updates for another week to allow me to play through the 1940 campaign in good conscience :D

Narvik - starting prestige 1740

Dv on turn 9

Reinforced and OS all my units and upgraded the captured Polish Artillery to Sturmpanzers (they cant have half tracks and at some point they're gonna be upgraded to better art anyway) This left me with 741 prestige

Well here we go, anothe rnice twist to the victory conditions, lets sink the HMS Glorious!

First turn I brought my fleet together ready to go hunting for that elusive carrier....the hunt proved to be rather more let the Allied fleet come to me! I guess they were trying to reach Narvik but they did kinda come to me. In the end with the intervention of my 2 Ju88s the naval engagement was strait forward - lost 2 destroyers and 1 schnellboote. the other schnellboote was at half strength and another destroyer was at 1 str. My big guns only lost 1 str point between the 3 of them, though thank god for the bombers other wise the Warspite would have caused me some difficulties!

Overall I'd say this one followed the other norway scenarios on being perhaps a touch to easy, though as previously stated on Colonel level I think perhaps I should be finding it a touch easy (Been playing strat games including PG for more than 20 years, I'd consider myself above average!)

Ending prestige - 1588

EDIT: Almost forgot to add....the RAF! For the 1st time I really had to fight for control of the skies, the Hurricane fell reasonably easy (though it did take a step off of both my fighters) But that Spit! Damned near held of both fighters and a BF110!!!! A taste of things to come?

I can't comment on the updated version but Narvik felt too easy for me as well.

The paratroopers are not under attack. They can entrench or attack as they please. The naval battle could possibly be the only problem.
I wonder why this is the case. I guess it is not many British land units and lots of room to maneuver and attack Narvik from all directions.

Much stronger fortifications and more units in and around Narvik and some roaming infantry squads near the paratroopers perhaps?

I have to agree....They need a real upgrade of the defences around there. And the Naval battle really isn't going to be a problem. Just so long as you bring a Ju88 or 2...

Getting ready to start my 1st scenario and I though I'd do a check on what you start with if you start the campaign in 1940 against what I have bringing my core forward....

1940 core v my core

Infantry: 5v7
Pioniere 1v1
Grenadier 1v2
Wehrmact 1v2
Gebirgsjager 0v1
Bruckenpioniere 0v1
Fallschrimjager 2v0
A clear advantage to me I think...I may not have the para but all my guys are in half tracks whilst a lot of the 1940 startin gforces ar in trucks or on foot!

Tanks: 4v5
Pz IIIF 1v2
Pz IVD 1v0
Pz 38(t) 1v1
Pz I 1v2
Pretty close but I think I win this one as well

Artillery: 2v6
15cm 1v0
10.5cm 1v3
Sturmpanzer 0v3
A clear advantage here especially as my towed units are in half tracks..

Air: 3v9
Bf109E 1v3
Bf110D 1v2
Ju87B 1v2
Ju88A 0v2
No comment.... :D

The 1940 core also has a Panzerjager SPAT and a SdKfz 222 recon which I have no answer too...plus 3 more core slots.
I also have 3 SE units 1xGrenadier in half tracks 2xPzIIIFs (1 just awarded in 1st 1940 scenario)

1940 start prestige= 1455 (to buy 3 new core units)
My prestige= 1232 and thats after reinforcing everything except the new SE Panzer III to 12 strength!

And then theres XP - 1940 core have mostly just over 100 xp with several at 200.....all exept 2 of my units have 225....and thats my new PzIII and one of my fighters only has 200 :(

All told I definately have a much better start here...should it be this much easier carrying 1939 core over?

Eben-Emael - starting prestige 1232 (after Reinforcing all units)

DV achieved on turn 14

I upgraded all my towed artillery to 15cm, both my Bf110Cs to Ds and my 2 Panzer Is to Panzer IVDs. I also chose to buy one Fallschirmjager to add to my core as they could be useful later on and I had a "drop zone" to deploy them to reinforce the initial attack on the forts. That left me with 287 prestige

Well someones cranked the difficulty up!!! I (wisely) chose to ignore the north and south crossings as too well defended and just broke through the middle where all the forts were reasonably easily knocked out (starting with no ammo helped!) Though it has to be said I did eventualy take out all the forts in the north and south but I cant imagine that would be even close to feasable with the 1940 starting core! Two allied tacs surprised me and caused me a lot of hurt...silly me only took 1 fighter and 1 fighter bomber in! A couple of core units were almost lost and the northern recon unit destroyed and the auxillary pioniere finished at 2 steps.
The AI was also far more agressive than in previous scenarios, in the end..a big thumbs up!
Ending prestige - 872 and a fairly large repair bill

I should probably take another look at the starting force of DLC 1940. It seems to do well enough, but then you have a lot of units in your reserve, something not possible to as a campaign start point. Eben-Emael only has 19 core slots, you have 27 core units... and three SE units.

Some of the reseves are due to not upgrading through 1939 but buying new. The panzer Is for instance, alot of people would have upgraded them to the Pz38s I had but I just bought new, same thing done with the Pionieres.

Its not the core slots that prevent "over buying" reserves for the 1940 campaign but the lack of Prestige to start

EDIT: And another thing to consider is whether or not to alter the chance of getting a SE unit? Its almost guarenteed to have 3 if you want by the end of the 39 campaign...sopmething the 1940 campaign cant hope to have to start! Unless you perhaps add one or two to their starting forces?

First, Horseman should play on Field Marshal if not one of the three extra difficulties.
This is one of the reasons behind the gigantic core force he got till the end of the 1939 campaign.

Why he still has Panzer I at the end of 1939 and rather buys so many extra units is a mystery to me.
The really large core force - did other players have a similarly numerous core?

My issue is - I think Eben-Emael is very fine as it is as 1940 Campaign start point.
But it's true that 1939 Campaign core units will have it much easier.

--> My suggestion is to make Narvik harder.
The 1940 campaign start could use an extra Stuka or Sturmpanzer.
