What do you think of representing the units in this way?
I like the mass effect, and it gives the impression of unit in formation ?

Probably needs some other backgrounds to get a better feel for what the effect would be. Especially city and forest can obscure the icons - more might actually be less, and less more, if you know what I mean.

I prefer a single icon since the details are probably more visible then. And the icons are important for the atmoshpere in my opinion.

It reminds me somewhat of the fighting animation in the original PG.
It does look nice but it might complicate things for the efx file and such.

I don't see how. The only problem might be the animations.
But I do agree with El_Condoro we need how it looks without being in a empty tile. There 's always the danger of cluttering things on the strategic map.

I also like the look, but think another problem may be the overlapping of the hexes. What happens when you have other units next to it? Some of the graphics are going to overlap: like the canons and the rear of the lower tank.

One of the first things I changed in Civilization IV was to remove the "unit group graphics" (and especially any animations). Yes, it's neat to see a group of axemen. Once.

Then you start to appreciate the clarity of having a single unit graphic. That never moves or changes posture, to make it as easily recognizable as possible.
