Longasc 1939 GC (bugs/report for each Scenario)

Post by Longasc »

This campaign is played at Field Marshal difficulty with all rules enabled.
I will add a report for every scenario I played.

POZNAN: Decisive Victory in turn 13 of 14.

Lost the AT unit, bought:
2 BF109E, 1 JU87B, 1 HE111
1 Pioniere + 2 Wehrmacht Infantry

A very nice scenario. It never rained and for some reason the Polish Airforce was totally inactive. They didn't ever attack.
Not sure why there is 1 STR Panzer unit far north and why the AA units and the Fighter have ZERO ammo at start.
It is probably intentional to slow down the Panzer from advancing but I think at least the Polish fighters could use some ammo.
Otherwise the recon unit will spot them and the BF110 will kill 3-5 and almost one-shot them without retaliation.

The only major obstacle was the final objective which was hard to take, I had to attack through defensive artillery fire with 3 Infantry units (1 Pionier) and tanks. Was a bloody mess but I did it.

The Decisive Victory is funnily easier to achieve than the Marginal Victory. Either you win decisive or not at all. I think if people fail to take something in this scenario it is the final third city in the upper right and not the airfields or anything else.

Suggestion: Marginal Victory: Either "All Airfields" or "All Objectives except Konin" (that's the city in the upper right)

Danzig Corridor S: Decisive Victory in turn 11 of 14.

Lost one Infantry fairly early on to Cavalry and Tank attack, bought:
Ju87B, Sturmpanzer I

This scenario comes with a surprise. I didn't care for the northernmost village and almost felt this would backfire. It did,

I already had everything conquered in turn 9, but a Polish counterattack with tons of small shitty tanks reconquered the northern bridge!
I needed till turn 11 to re-take it and contain the counter-attack.
The tanks conquered 2 non-objective cities and overall damage was low.

But it was a VERY NICE and well executed surprise. I don't know if they are timed or triggered, but it was a really nice experience.
Now that I know it it's kinda lost, but it is nevertheless well done, thumbs up. :)

Resistance was very light, this scenario was all about the nasty surprise at the end. I liked it and made lots of Prestige, even wasted some on elite replacements because I felt I had enough.

Lodz: Decisive Victory turn 12 of 13

I lost no core unit but all but three of the auxiliary units.
I could not buy any new units.
Upgraded my Panzer IA to the even more awesome Panzer IB. :)
(And now wonder if I should not have saved the Prestige)

I got a ton of Prestige, used Elite replacements frequently.

Something was odd. There is a HUGE force north, I scouted it with my He111 and almost fell from the chair.
I feared for my 2 Infantries and 1 Panzer IA who were north of the river and close to this force.

The force of General Kutrezba NEVER attacked. 1 Infantry and a Light Tank attacked in turn 12 my Infantry fortified in a city hex.
If this force was supposed to be a problem, I believe it is bugged! If this force would have counter-attacked the scenario would also have been much harder.
Weather was rainy at times.

I really liked how the Cavalry charge and a WTF 7 damage hit of the Pak in the South decimated the aux units, but I am puzzled what was wrong with the strong northern force.

The concept of the units at Kutno is foreshadowing the following scenario of Piatek.
dshaw62197 wrote:I also liked how the scenario briefing suggested that taking the rail route north of Lodz might be a good way to hit the town from the rear. I advanced cautiously, with one infantry unit entrained, another on foot, and an artillery unit for support. I'm glad I was slow, else I might have railed my unit right into the teeth of the Kutno pocket! It is nice to see that the scenario briefings aren't always the best information... I like that even my superiors can be surprised sometimes!

I like how the campaign is progressing so far. In fact, with the Kutno carry-over to the Piatek scenario, it almost feels like a narrative developing. I do feel like I'm getting drawn into a storyline. It's nice having multiple scenarios in one front, as opposed to jumping from country to country as in the original 1939 campaign. I'm finding myself thinking, "what's going to happen next? What other surprises do the Poles have in store?" Again, nice touch.
Issues with excessive polish inactivity seems to be a re-occurring theme though, so this is an issue that will probably get some attention.

Piatek: Decisive Victory, all objectives defended after turn 20

I bought a Stuka and it was well worth it in this scenario.
Losses: One or two aux units.

I wondered a bit about the sand/desert colored German recon vehicle that gets destroyed right away at the start of the scenario. Because I believed it to be a Polish unit! :) (any particular reason for this unit to have a different color?)

The battle itself was a very fun defensive scenario.
At first it seemed simple. But apparently there were scripted or triggered attack waves.

The first 8 turns were rather easy and gave me the impression that all attacks will be through the center, failing to cross the river.
Some surprise fighter attacks were nice.
Turn 9-10 saw an attack in the West
Turn 11-14 were mostly East
15-20 another thrust to the Center. I even lost a bridge for a moment.

I got a lot of prestige through my recon unit which slipped through undefended territory and captured around 5 non-victory hexes which gave me a substantial prestige boost.

Verdict: A very nice defensive scenario. Strong Polish Cavalry. Bombed General K. at the end and liked it. I liked how I had to shuffle artillery and reserve troops between hotspots. I also liked that somewhat daring Panzer counter-attacks in the flank of the attackers were possible. I almost lost some units this way, but who dares wins and it was fun! :)

Suggestion: All attack waves should trigger 2 turns earlier to make it a little harder.

Kampinoska Forest: Decisive Victory turn 12 of 16

Lost an Aux Cavalry while scouting, could not buy new units (no extra core slots this time)

This map is very nice exercise how to do a flank attack. I pity the fool who drives tanks through the forest instead of the flanks! :)
It also illustrated that Cavalry can be very useful in this stage of the war and terrain.
Funnily my flank attack almost ended in disaster: I should have scouted Modlin. Modlin Fortress with 20 STR defenders is a major roadblock.
I slipped a Tank and a Cav through and captured the airfield behind, but the rear attack was not needed, my troops were strong enough to take the objectives in frontal assaults.

Besides that - and despite that - the scenario was probably one of the easiest in the whole campaign. Too easy!

Suggestions:
- The "destroy 12 trains" objective would be nice if Panzer Corps finally gets an option to show 1. the briefing 2. the objectives for the scenario 3. a list which objectives have been accomplished so far. This is an UI issue that makes a per se nice objective somewhat clumsy. I guess that I already destroyed 12 trains and you probably do so by default anyways, but this really cries again for some additions to the UI.
- either stronger defended final city objective or some entrenched Infantry on the way to it would emphasize the "flank attack" strategy and make things a little more interesting.
- Modlin Fortress is fine as it is. I liked that!

Modlin: Decisive Victory turn 13 of 17

I bought a Panzer 38t and wondered why I did it afterwards.
+ I got a SE unit through reloading because Horseman got one, too, and I was jealous. :>
(I see he just created a thread about that. Will have to add my feelings about the random SE units and how they are awarded as this is a separate topic)

No losses, the scenario was BY FAR too easy.
The artillery train and Modlin fortress had some firepower but not the ground forces to back them up properly.

Suggestion:
1.) Make a lot more units strength 10. I dunno how much this scenario is modeled after history, but for the sake of gameplay stronger units would be useful.
2.) Add a 2nd 10 strength and entrenched Infantry on the other side of the river "Bug" (not a bug, that's the name of the river).
3.) In general add some more enemy units at strength 10.

I liked that the game continued at the fortress that stalled my progress in the previous scenario! Very nice!
BUT... where is the FORT in fortress here? Make it a stronger enemy position. (Feels odd that it is so weak after being such a thorn in the side in the previous scenario)
This time at least Prestige wasn't that plentiful, but I had still more than enough for elite reinforcements.

Warsaw North: DV turn 12 of 22

I could not buy units and either lost only an aux unit or nothing.

The GOOD:
- You have the choice between two directions of attack (or rather two scenarios, Warsaw North and South) and they seem quite balanced, thumbs up for that
- The city fighting was intense. Polish Cavalry was the most dangerous attacker again
- The extra artillery for conquering certain outside objectives is a GREAT mechanic and idea

The BAD:
- Could be a little more demanding
OR
- Change victory objectives: Decisive Victory based on time, let's say turn 14, Minor 14+ for example.
The extra objectives - I have already forgotten what they were. It's about conquering the whole city anyways.
Rather back to Panzer General basics this time instead of inventing special objectives.
(Especially as long as we can't check objectives and progress during the scenario, yeah I know, I mentioned that several times already)

DV and MV would also allow players to play "Spoils of War" in case of a DV and go straight to Norway if only a MV is achieved.
That's very Panzer Generalesque.

About Spoils of War: This special scenario demands its own posting... I did not even start it yet and don't like it. :(

Spoils of War: General criticism

The general idea is that a minor clash between German and Soviet forces occurs while trying to grab as much land as possible.
It's a fascinating idea to let both armies fight each other at this time, but this is also were it ends.

IMO: A good WHAT-IF standalone scenario, but a BAD idea to include this in the campaign path! I already hate it.

Why?
Too much like a game and anticlimatic after the Battle for Warsaw. This "aftermath" feels out of place between the Poland and Norway scenarios.
All scenarios were quite historical so far, this ahistorical clash feels too "gamey", too much like a game to me in comparison.
The explanation how this could happen feels forced and I think it rather destroys feeling and flow of the campaign.

As a mere fictional scenario I would not have a problem with this scenario. The briefing also needs some corrections by a native speaker, the errors are not the major problem it should be rewritten as it is phrased awkwardly: http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/2763/spoilsofwar.jpg
(Read the text errors thread and I think regardless if this is intended to be an "accent" it is phrased badly and should be rewritten)

To put it bluntly, this scenario is a downer even before I started testing it!

That's fair, as the bonus scenario of the campaign it is pretty unique and entirely fictional. Some people have said they like it, but it's not unreasonable that others might not like such a change from the campaign flow.

I think the best answer is to reconfigure the campaign slightly for this scenario to be optional, just like Dunkirk is. That is, you get a major victory in Warsaw, the game prompts you to choose if u want to play Spoils of War. For those who dont like the obvious fictional content, they can skip it.

Good idea Kerensky about making it optional for those who don't like it! I personally liked it and found it an interesting change of pace! Gotta give you guys credit for really trying to cater to everyones tastes! Not an easy job! :D

Spoils of War: DV after turn 10 of 21.

See my general criticism of this scenario above. I find the idea of this contest/fight over disputed land too constructed and doesn't fit into the campaign. Even if the debriefing states that the Russian commander wanted to purge some officers this way which I found kinda nasty in a well done way. :)

I started with 2100 Prestige, 1836 after elite-replacements for several units. Too much! I could even use elite replacements all the time during this scenario.
I lost one of the tank destroyers due to bad luck early on, but nevertheless this was a very easy scenario.

The scenario has a major problem that I encountered already several times during this campaign:

The enemy units are very passive. Too passive! For example the KV-2 of Lieutenant Mikhailovich doesn't even attack unsupported and almost dead units standing right besides it! The tanks don't cross the Bug river, only the armored cars do. While the fighters are surprisingly aggressive (good!) the bomber didn't attack ANYTHING.
No kidding, I ran my Pz38t in an enemy Infantry and it was down to 1 STR. I backed it up with TWO Sturmpanzer Artilleries so that they could stop an Infantry attack on the tank. But the AI could easily have bombed the tank with its bomber. There was not even a fighter nearby. It was in range. Guess what? No attack on the Panzer which I already scratched from my core roster in my mind.

The AI often does stupid things like attacking and leaving good defensive positions, but something went wrong here.

I would rather have an active and attacking T-34 than a KV-2 named Lieutenant Mikhailovich that doesn't do anything and stands idle while I conquer the city directly besides it.

A pity this scenario could have been really interesting and maybe even challenging if the units would have shown normal behavior, they were oddly passive.

Nice! Seems at least the Panzer Corps team was not passive/inactive at all!

I think playing the scenarios again in scenario mode will be good enough for testing them with more active resistance.

Oslo: DV turn 9 of 14

- no losses
- I upgraded my 3 tanks to Panzer IIIF
- recon unit to this 8 wheel recon thingie
- turned my two SE units into Grenadiers

The "Norway" scenario has basically been split in three maps. The first map "Oslo" deals with the sinking of the cruiser Blücher and the initial phase of the invasion. "Lillehammer" and "Narvik" will be interesting, with Lillehammer featuring British Forces for the first time. Let's see if Narvik will portray the hardship of the 2000 paratroopers dropped there and the loss of many destroyers and cruisers. The Norway scenario of Panzer General/Corps did (except the paratroopers, I never dropped them up there) and is one of my favorite scenarios.

The bonus objective is to prevent the three Oscarborg batteries from sinking the Blücher.
Left alone this might happen, but there is zero enemy airforce and very weak air defense.

I didn't use the Stukas to bomb Oscarborg in panic. I used my He111 for that and fired at the batteries with the Blücher, leaving the weak destroyer passive as bait for the batteries. I landed my Pioniere unit, a Panzer and a Sturmpanzer on the east side of the fjord, splitting the western main force in two groups, one advanced north while the other marched along the coast, supported by the light cruisers.

Pioniere, Panzers and making use of suppression by bombers or artillery are key to crack the forts.

The scenario is again a bit too easy. It is fun to play but why ...
... are there again so many 5 strength units only? This has become a bad trend. Germany already attacks/moves first, that's enough Blitzkrieg/surprise attack advantage.
... it's too easy to save the Blücher - she was at 10 strength when the last fort got eliminated. (P.S. it always sounds strange to Germans that British refer to ships as women even if they have the name of a male General)

Let's see if the other two scenarios can live up to the challenge of Panzer Corps/General's "Norway" scenario.

Haha nice! I will go on vacation in Norway!

Lillehammer: DV in turn 10 of 18 (not entirely sure if it was turn 10)

Bought: Sturmpanzer I
Lost: 1 Wehrmacht Infantry, 1 Panzer IIIF
I got careless and the British Infantry is decidedly better equipped than Norwegian/Polish Infantry. :(

The major problem in this scenario is the frozen terrain. I was often out of fuel, which resulted in dangerous situations.
I definitely didn't plan with the higher fuel consumption in mind!

I think the scenario is fine as it is, except that I would turn all 5 STR units in 10 and add some extra entrenchment to the Infantry defending the Lillehammer hexes.

Narvik: DV 8 of 18 turns

Kerensky already mentioned that Narvik is going to increase in difficulty soon. This probably refers to the ground forces around Narvik, I found the fleet nasty enough: I sunk the Glorious, but oops, I lost the Gneisenau. :P (Maybe this could be a DV objective, sink the Glorious but don't lose either Scharnhorst or Gneisenau).

I bought a Ju87B and a Ju88A to replace my two lost core units from Lillehammer and to help sinking ships. I focused on the destroyers in the fjord initially, which I came to regret as all my destroyers outside and the Gneisenau got sunk, the submarine got lost as well and battleships lose a lot of power without a spotter!

I really liked how the paratroopers were in trouble but think they need a little more pressure. I had little trouble in the south with Stuka support, while I had minor issues in the North. I think making all units strength 10 should go a long way in making the scenario more challenging and take some more turns.

What's next? I am going to start the 1940 campaign from scratch with the 1940 starter core tomorrow!
