Hi all,
looking at running the following and wonder what advice people may have for terrain, deployment etc. Everything is unprotected/average except the CV. South Welsh are a personal favorite so I am looking at what I can do with them.
650pts
1 x IC
1 x FC
2 x TC
4 x Prot Cv superior light spear (1 unit)
8 x LH jav (2 units)
40 x MI LB (5 units)
16 x LF LB (2 units)
8 x LF Jav (1 unit)
cheers

Hi Dazzler,
You might want to get into contact with Craig Waterson - I believe he's at least on the OzFog list, and he might be on here, though I've never 'noticed' him.
He does surprisingly well with it, but I think it's mostly because people underestimate the shooting and try to 'outshoot him' because of the unprotected troops.
Personally, on a 5x3 table I think you have too much mounted, and don't need the FC. Those points may be better spent else-where... but I could be wrong.

Craig is overseas for about a year so it may be a while before you hear from him. He does check this occasionally while overseas. His armies were 800 points. from what I remember from them he had hardly any cavalry (quite possibly none) and he used to run Irish allies to bump up the superiors, as well as getting some average two handed weapons who could tie down units in contact.. It took craig a little while to work out this army but the archer blocks can be surprisingly tough. Don't forget the support shooting in impact, this is how the archers can win impact combats and if they can disrupt on the impact can take out combat units. Do not worry to much about LF unless they are compulsory, this armies strength is the MF archer blocks, also drop the FC. The IC is the one who holds this army together, and the 2 TC can go in to the front ranks when needed or help bolster a far flank. The other thing he took a couple of spear units who were used to support the front archers and positioned behind the join of two units so that it can support two units and engage a pursuing unit if the get through the line. He did say that it took him a while to learn how to use it and it relies a little it on getting good shooting rolls (a number of times he would do 6 or 7 hits only to see the opponent roll a 6 and not lose a base). He found it had good shock value as people would see unprotected MF and think they would roll straight over the top of them ad would get frustrated when the archer blocks sat there out performing combat inf blocks.

Re: Later Welsh (OathOF)
Is it intended that in the Later Welsh Allies list are no options for commanders?
Re: Later Welsh (OathOF)
This must be a tipo.
There are few, as an example the Vietnamese Allies (Lost Scroll page 47), can have an Inspired Commanders which is not allowed normally for an ally (and cost is wrong as well).
So most probably you should have a FC/TC option for 40/25

Re: Later Welsh (OathOF)
As to terrain options, go for enclosed fields as they are rough going and provide cover from shooting for your unprotected troops, without obscuring LOS or taking away shooting ranks.
