Ottoman series

Post by stockwellpete »

I have put together this list of battles involving the Ottoman Empire between 1300 and 1500. I will try to make as many of them as possible. Play-testing for the first one on the list is already underway. If I have missed any out, or if you have come across recent studies with maps, orders of battle etc then please let me know. Zlatica 1443 and Jalowaz 1444 are of particular interest to me.

You're missing the Crusade of Nicopolis in 1396 which features Hungarians plus assorted Crusaders in what may be the most famous medieval battle with the Ottomans. The wikipedia entry <http> is a good starting point with a number of references. Tuchman is especially good for general background and the development of the crusade.

Yes. I have left Nicopolis out, haven't I? Bit daft of me as it is one of the biggest battles. Also just come across Stephaniana 1344 (Turks v Serbs). "A Distant Mirror" - is that the Tuchman book that deals with the Ottomans? I think we have a copy of that in the library where I work.

I have done . . .

Bapheus 1301, Dimbos 1303, Pelekanon 1329, 1st Kosovo 1389, Nicopolis 1396, Ankara 1402 and Varna 1444

I have not done . . .

Stephaniana 1344, Ihtiman 1355, Adrianople 1365, Maritsa 1371, Dubravnica 1381, Savra 1385, Plocnik 1386, Bileca 1388, Rovine 1395, Zlatica 1443, Torvioll 1444, Jalowaz 1444, 2nd Kosovo 1448, Constantinople 1453, Belgrade 1456, Albulena 1457, Ohrid 1464, Otlukbeli 1473, Vaslui 1475, Valea Alba 1476, Breadfield 1479, Siege of Rhodes 1480, Otranto 1480/1 and Krbava Field 1493.

I am sort of "Ottoman-ed out" now, if you get my meaning. Many of the battles "not done" are either quite obscure, or have very little available in English about them. Others are sieges that are not really possible to do with FOG. I may return to do a few more of these next year but at the moment I have finished with my Ottoman endeavours.
