What is the gameplay effect of awards like crosses?

What is the gameplay effect of awards like crosses?

Is there any gameplay effect to your units getting the iron crosses or is it purely decorative?

The awards themselves are decorative - however the 1st three you get indicate the unit has reached the level where it could gain a hero
