Skipping 1939 on to 1940

Post by Xerkis »

I played the first scenario from the 1940 campaign by starting fresh in to 1940. That is to say I did not run through 1939 and then continued in to 1940 from there. I’m sure that playing from 1939 and lead in to 1940 would give different results, because by then you should have a fairly well developed core force.
But the point of having multiple campaigns is so you can start from that point and move forward.

I played it twice on the default level and found it a bit challenging. First time a loss (buying more artillery and tanks) and using a straight on tactic. The second time a marginal victory (purchasing pioneires to handle all the bunkers) and using a more of a flanking tactic. You do not start off with very many units and can only purchase 3 more. True the opening briefing does mention that Pioneires are needed, but who wants a core force of nothing but pioneires? After all the game is call “Panzer” Corps, not “Pioneires” Corps.

Don’t’ get me wrong though; I personally enjoyed the challenge, but a newer player might find starting in 1940 a bit on the frustrating side.

Out of curiosity when you say 'all the bunkers' do you mean the ones around Eben-Emael, or the ones far to the North and South that are blocking other the Meuse crossings?

Hex locations 8,9 10,17 14,14 and 14,15.

The idea, at least I think the optimal one, looks something like this. Following this path, it is entirely possible to completely avoid all fortifications(marked in blue) except for those immediately around Eben-Emael.

Perhaps some more details in the briefing warning the player to avoid the other crossing will be appropriate. That is why I placed AUX recon cars, after all.

"Advance recon units have detected serious opposition at other river crossings, so you are advised to focus your suprise attack on eben-emael and bypass these other fortifications."

That’s what I meant by “a straight on tactic” on my first attempt was to try and plow through the bungers.

The second time was to do more or less the plan you have there. And that worked a lot better.

It just felt a bit rough for a first off scenario.

As a warning, you should be aware that advance reconnaissance units have detected significant fortifications along all other crossing of the Meuse River, and you are advised to bypass these strong points by focusing your efforts on Eben-Emael.

Has been added to the Eben-Emael briefing.

Thanks for the aux recon on that one, I started off thinking of trying to force my way through them till I noticed, hey I just punched a hole through their bunker line, why try to force my way through more bunkers??!!
Common sense kicked in and I went through the hole, kind of forgot the briefing suggestion.

Sort of brings up a point.
It might be nice to be able to reread the briefing while in the middle of a scenario.

….. but this has nothing to do with the DLC.

Has been added to the Eben-Emael briefing.
That should help, if you do decide to take this as your first scenario.

If I remember the briefing suggested using Pioneires…. Did it say “use” or “buy”? Big difference in how you are "forced" to build you core army from here.
