Peasants are revolting, m'lord!!!!! TW Community uprise

Post by duncan »

I usually have a look once a day or so at TW center forums, they have a bunch of great posters with a lot of interesting things to say about those TW games and History (well, they've got their share of 14 years old kiddies with the "RTW Roooolz!!! Warcraft PWND!! stuff, but that's the RTW influence).

Well, it seems they're on the uprise against CA:

I have to admit I never noticed this bug (but I noticed some strange AI behaviours related to this), but this seems to be serious!!!!! I mean, I don't mind if the AI breaks a siege in a city of mine, I'll keep playing until everything it's in its place, but this hampers seriously any chance of an expanding AI (many sieges not seen because of fog of war are broken too)!!!!! Even Iain had something to say about this (as seen in wargamer), from what I've seen.

Anyway, it seems CA has ignored the problem and they have no intention to release another patch: Two patches per game (well, 1.1 wasn't even a patch for us singleplayers). Activision and Sega lurk from the sideline. Sad situation.

Will Slitherine follow the same way???? Or will they keep doing things allright, like Blizzard (ehem) or Bioware (double ehem) had done in the past, despite their sales figures ????

It seems that it's getting harder for PC game developers: you can stay independent, but you won't be selling much. Or you can sell your soul to a great name/distributor and start doing dumbed down games for the kiddies and for XBOX too. Are we approaching the end of PC games (industrial, I mean) ??? Are Activision, EA, Atari and Eidos (CM 5, rofl) the four horsemen of apocalypsis (spelling)???? Am I getting drunk at work???

Let's see what happens next. Let's hope Slitherine will stay as they are righ now, even if they have massive success with their forthcoming games.

There is a certain war against PC for gaming for some time now. People are trying to predict an end, for which they are already working, kind of funny actualy if not the the down side of it.
The are missing the big picture I think, the PC has endless possibilities, with upgrades and all, and though a single upgrade can cost you as much as one console, it still doesn't matter much to many people. There were always other gaming avenues than PCs, from consoles to home computers, which for a large amount of time were far superior for gaming than PCs. PCs were far far far more expensive, far les powerful for graphics and sound, and even memory, and still kicked everyone aside and prevailed. From as long as I remember people are predicting the end of the PC as a gaming tool, using the same exact reasons. They keep finding ways of predicting the end, in terms of sales of games, etc etc.
I am not in favour of any single configuration for gaming, be it PC or anything else, but I find it very funny to be alive and see those people always being wrong.
The bad thing is that some magazines from time to time (I won't mention names now) try to change their format because they "see" that gamers are changing and abandoning the PC for video consoles. Sure...I have seen more than one making the mistake, but they just don't get it. Pity.

As for RTW, I did not click on the link, the rare times I play the game I rather not be aware of any serious bugs, it is bad enough as it is.

I think that the majority of the gaming public wants simplicity. And consoles give them that. The reality is that it is very hard indeed to find shelf space in the US for niche titles. so developers are trying to make their products attractive to as wide an audience as possible.

The trick is, and what we hope to do, is to provide a friendly face and a simple enough approach to the game to draw people into the depth and strategy beneath.

As for PC gaming, well, the variety of PCs is ever increasing, and it's tough to do compatability on every permutation, and returns are expensive. But the rewards are still there for good PC games.

Cheers
