Screenshots are the simplest option, and they can work - I created (and still create) most of my plane graphics using screenshots from European Air War...
That said, I'm pretty sure there's something useful in the official modding tools for Dawn of War and/or it's sequel - something like a model viewer/exporter.
I'm pretty sure people have been using DoW models in Civ4 mods at some point, so it ought to be possible.
Provided you have the right tools, you can even modify stance and props etc. of a model, especially if it's a living being - for example using Poser, like (afaik) HBalck.
I don't have Poser, nor do I have 3DS-Max or even just Blender skills (since it's free, I DO have Blender, but I'm mostly clueless about how it works), so I mostly resort to screenshots.
