What artillery do you use?

Post by monkspider »

I have noticed that, more than perhaps any other class of unit, it is not always clear what type of artillery is best. I have focused on the field artillery, but even here, the choice isn't clear. The less powerful artillery has more ammo and a higher rate of fire, so I have used the 17cm I believe it is as my artillery of choice, which isn't the most powerful, but the best compromise between ammo and power I thought. I haven't used the rocket or mobile artillery much because their lack of range or lack of ammo (or both) tends to be a major pain. Has anyone had good success with these units?

I find that the traditional field artillery is less effective in the later scenarios, does anyone have any thoughts in particular on what late-war artillery is best?

Still in m y 1st campaign but I've used a mixture of field artillery (heaviest available) and selp propelled, Sturmpanzers to start then on to SiGs when available....has worked ok for me

I stop at the 150cm. Anything heavier or self propelled just doesn't have enough ammo.
Sometimes I do use the Wurfrahmen though.

To complicate things a bit more, we must consider the rate of fire:

I go for range, attack and ammo. That means keeping with towed artillery.
Got an hero with +1 range and did upgrade to Nebelwerfer.

Going the Sturmpanzer route seemed a good choice at first (range + attack) but the way incremental upgrades works mean we would waste prestige if upgrading to 17 or 21cm field guns.

Did do that beacuse of the ammo too.
But then I considered that after a series of shots, the 17 and 21cm would have lost only one shot compared to the 15cm.

A 25 series with 15cm with 7 ammo first, then 21cm with 5 ammo and finally a self propeled 3-range with 4 ammo (X are shots, O are resupply):
XXXXXXXOXXXXXXXOXXXXXXXOX - 3 resupllies
XXXXXOXXXXXOXXXXXOXXXXXOX - 4 resupllies
XXXXOXXXXOXXXXOXXXXOXXXXO - 5 resupllies

Both the 15cm and self-propelled (except Wespe) have 12 Soft Attack, 21cm has 18 Soft Attack.

Sometimes I upgrade to the 170 actually. Whenever I get a +1 range hero, I give him a 170mm gun. Makes distinguishing between who are my 3 range and 4 range artillery pieces lightning quick and easy.

Checked the predictions from a 15cm and a 17cm?

My +1 Range Artillery usually gets upgraded into Wurfrahmen 40's, I find that a mobile 20 SA is incredible for fast pushes. It also brutalizes enemy Artillery pieces quite effectively.
The low ammo capacity isn't a huge issue since it's half-tracked and can catch up to the push on clear ground better than a Opel Truck drawn artillery.

I usually tend to go for 21cm due to it's higher HA allowing for better suppression of Tanks since Soft Attack targets are covered by the Wurfrahmen.

I'm with Kerensky. I'll usually have 1 Nebelwerfer too. Got one with a +2 range bonus. That really came in handy.

Generally the rockets have more impact against soft targets and infantry, so use them on entrenched troops. My favourite artillery piece is actually the stug assault gun. Tough enough to drive up to the front lines for an assault and then hold your forces together during the counter attack. The allies just can't match it early on in the war.

Nebelwerfers rock! I was playing the Hylan valley scenario for the first time yesterday and these babies saved my skin. I saw Comet tanks receiving -3 damage from them on defensive artillery support sometimes. Very surprised at that, because I also tended to use them for soft target assaults only.

I like a mix. Towed for when I need to prepare for an assault and mobile for when I need them here NOW!. I tend to go for the biggest towed guns and the SiG and mortar half track for my moblie ones. I try to end up with 3 of each type.

I tend to use mostly Sturmpanzers. Panzer Corps is a game of movement (especially the DLC and when playing on the Guderian level) and self propelled artillery is faster than towed as it doesn't need to be untowed all the time. The best artillery units available from the beginning are the Sturmpanzer and the 10.5 leFH so I tend to sell back to GHQ my only 10.5 leFH and fully equip my army with SIGs.
Sturmpanzers at the moment are overrated in my opinion as they have better combat stats than the 10.5 leFH and the same range (IRL the 10.5 leFH had an effective range of about 10 km whereas the sIg 33 an effective range of 5 km) . Maybe in the future this particular aspect could be reviewed. I also believe that the Sturmpanzer should be available to buy in the Low countries scenario as it's development was based on reports during the polish campaing that the towed SIG 33 couldn't easily keep up with the Panzers. Its only drawback at the moment is the lack of ammo but this can be dealt with easily using them only when they are really needed in offense or defense and not wasting ammo in barrages that cannot be exploited by infantry or panzers.

A little factoid...70% of german casualties on the eastern front during WWII were caused by artillery fire. Artillery accounted for 50-60% of Russian casualties on the Eastern Front during WWII.

Here is an article from wikipedia about the Sturmpanzer I Bison--but at the bottom there are links to articles about other german artillery and vehicles. Is there a Sturmpanzer IV in PC? How about the SturmTiger?
