Questions about Scenario Editor

Post by flakfernrohr »

Hello again. I have been playing around with the scenario edtior. I followed Kerensky's intstructions to the letter (I thought). I have saved the scenario in several stages just in case I mess something up I spent hours on doing (like rivers). I have done the tile backgrounds, hex descriptions, everything except asign parimeters, units, victory, etc. I am fine tuning the map right now. But for some reason when I have gone back to re-edit the rivers to add some more and put in more details, they disappear when I click on the Make Hex units command. Luckily I got the one I wanted finalized and it IS SAVED, but when I have gone back to it to fine tune the little tweaks and make small changes, I click on the generate Hexes command and the river additions I made in my second and third edit are GONE!. I am very careful about doing this according to the manual, etc. and diligently saving this in steps as I add more to the map. I cannot figure out what I am NOT doing or messing up.

Also the map is 49X49, so it says I need to string maps together. The manual says nothing about how to go about doing this. Could someone help me out a litte on these problems. I don't want to lose about four days of map editing down the drain.

Thanks
Old Timer Panzer General fan. Maybe a Volksturm soldier now. Did they let Volksturm drive Panzers?

These questions are best in the Scenario Design forum. The problem is that when Generate Tiles (G key) is done it wipes many of the overlays. The overlays must be added *after* all the underlying terrain types etc are finalised. It's something many of us hope will be addressed in a future patch. I have never heard of 'string maps together' - can you provide details on the Scenario Design forum? Cheers

Ya, that happened to me a couple of times before I figured out that you have lay rivers, roads and rails using the Terrain Features function or they aren't really there and will disappear when using Generate Tiles (for instance, putting down road overlays instead of using Terrain Features will result in no roads actually being there, so units will not get the benefit when moving). Lay all the Terrain and Terrain Features first before using Generate Tiles. Once the general layout looks right, use Generate Tiles. If rivers or roads didn't turn out right and get cut off or not appear, make the Terrain Feature changes and check again. Once everything is right, then you can make your final tweaks and additions: like using a different river or hill tile to mix up the look. Never use Generate Tiles again or you will lose all your fine tuning work (hopefully, they'll fix this in the future).

I believe the Overlays are only there so you can mix up the look and use different ones than the ones that came through Generate Tiles (ie. so all the Mountain hexes don't look the same). If you use an Overlay without the corresponding Terrain or Terrain Feature "underneath", then the Overlay isn't truly there. When you look at Terrain Features, you will see four choices: Major River, Minor River, Road and Rail. To place them, just select the feature you want, then hold down left click and "draw" the river/road/rail on the map. When you hit hit Generate Tiles, then they will show up as Overlays. They are easier to draw when no overlays are present (just the Terrain icons) so you can see all the connections, intersections and end points. However, you can still use it on maps that have already generated overlays. Just use the same method of holding left click and "drawing" the features on the map.
