Fog of War

Post by Kriegsheld »

How random is fog of war? Does it affect every attack the same way during a turn or does it only occur randomly during a turn, and does it occur in differing degrees during different attacks? Are attacks by the AI also affected by fog of war?

Are we talking about the same thing here? FOW is the shaded area of the map - the bits none of your units are able to see into. Or do you mean random results - the random die modifier (RDM)? I think randomness is the same for the AI as it is for players but there have been discussions that the random factor affects the Allies more because of their unit stats.

Thanks, El Condoro, yes I meant the randomness factor. There seems to be an additional factor at work sometimes in the attack calculations that causes wildly unpredicted results. This also seems to occur more in some turns than others. Is this factor turn-based so that it's added to the attack calculations, for example, on turn 5 but not on turn 6?

No, but the random numbers are seeded at the beginning of a turn so if you replay the turn with the same sequence of attacks, you'll get the same results every time. There is no way designers can set luck per turn. It could just be a really bad turn. Later, you might get a really good one. :)

It is "order" based. If you repeat a turn in the exact same order, then you get the same results.
If you change the order of attacks, the results "change".
For example you attack with a Infantry unti and get terrible results, you can load, do a few attacks with other units and then try again, most likely you will get different results with the Infantry now.

That's because the random number seeding is done beforehand. So if the results went A B C D they would follow that order of results every time, but as you say, if you change the order of your actions the results seem different.
