Locks at "Loading Game"

Post by Moltke71 »

GR 2.0 won't go past the "Loading Game" screen. Base game is CEAW-Gold.

I have XP.

Have you installed GS v1.06 before and added GS v2.0 ontop of that?

Then you have to go into the folder:
c:\Program Files\Slitherine\Commander - Europe at war\data\scenario folder
and delete all scn files ending with ai.

All files you should have in the folder should be:
1939.scn
1940.scn
1941.scn
1942.scn
1943.scn
1944.scn
ww2.map

The reason is that the scenarios from GS v1.06 ending with ai aren't compiled for GS v2.0. The only change was that it set the status of Switzerland to pro-Axis to prevent the Axis AI from DoW'ing Switzerland. In GS v2.1 that will be out maybe in September we will have coded this into the main game so we don't need separate scenario files.

If you have other scn files in the folder (e. g. by using the game editor) then those won't work either. We had to change the game editor too in order to support new terrain types like Airfield and desert hills.

Usually when the game crashes at the load screen it's because it crashes with the compiling of the scenario files.

Have you installed any previous versions of GS before?

Also, during loading there's a DOS screen behind the game as it's loading that you can see by pressing the Alt-Tab keys at the same time. Below is what it should look like if everything loads normally. Do you see any error messages in yours? If so, what are they? Can you post a screen cap?

And sometimes folks have had problems with sound card compatibility but this has mostly been on the MAC side. In My Documents\CEAW Grand Strategy 2.0 there's a settings.txt file. You can try loading the game with sound effects and music off by setting those values to 0 as shown below.

You don't need GSv1.06. In fact see this thread on uninstalling GSv1.06 before installing GSv2.00 or what to do if you have already installed GSv2.00 over the top of GSv1.06.

Also, see this thread on installing and verifying the GSv2.00 install if you have the gold, non-MH version.
