MP and version levels

Just thinking ahead here and came up with a few questions.

Whenever there is a release of a patch, how does that affect MP games?
Do both players need to be on the same version level to be able to play?
And if there are game rules or unit’s data changes in a patch; if the two players are on different release levels (which also might be different than what is on the server), which release level is the MP game played on?

My experiance with Field of Glory ( uses same server system) is that you cant even log on to MP until you update to the newest version...

That would certainly make things a whole lot simpler.

Yes this will be the way it works - we need to ensure everyone has the latest version so the server will keep you synched. You wont be able to log in without the latest version and you'll be promted to download it if you are not up to date.
