some ideas for a tournament i've put down

Post by porsenna »

Hi people of FOG

here i want to put down some ideas for a tournament...
the first is this:why don't we organize a tournament or maybe a league with armies 300 or 250 point small?
i've played some games with armies small like this and the battles has resulted intresting like bigger ones: also you can vary more the army list of a single army, even with armies that don't have big variety of units. For example one can use a roman army more focused on cavalry or a french medieval with a lot of infantry and archers..in brief it could be an intresting and nice challenge to play with small armies!
The second is why don't we play a tournament where two opponents play two rounds with differents amount of point for armies?
for example i play with the opponent the first battle with a 350 pt army and him with 500 pt. In the return battle we reverse the thing, and we can calculate the winner by fixing a differential between the penality points take and give...still i haven't put down a calculation but i think it can be done...i 've wrote this because i haven't the time to organize a tournament by myself(a family and a metal band needs my care!) so people give me some feedback, and tell me if you like , if you want to put up something or tell me if you have other ideas to add..
Cheers :D

A small army tournament would be a good idea, I think. I would be interested in a late medieval competition (SOA or EE).

I am not so keen on this idea. 500 v 350 is very, very one-sided and would rarely make for a good game.

hi Pete

For now we can begin with small armies competition...medieval you said? -nice idea. The things that i was said about varing the army list i found it true especially with SOA armies..I was thinking about tournament like soccer cup, with groups(group a group b etc.)and with elimination phases(like quarter finals and so on) with at least 32 challengers organized in 8 groups..or too much people?

I think that maybe 300pts would be a good size, porsenna; late medieval would definitely be "Storm of Arrows" but it could include "Eternal Empire" too. A straight knock-out might be fun and it wouldn't matter exactly how many players you had as long as it was 8 or more. So, for example, if you had 13 entrants you could have a first round of 5 matches (10 players) with 3 players getting byes into the quarter finals - where there would be 8 players (the 5 winners plus the 3 byes).

Trying to organise it like a World Cup would be more difficult, but not impossible. I would aim for 16 players (first come, first served), 4 groups of four, first and second in each group through to the quarter-finals (like 1966 World Cup competition :D ).

The timing of the event would need some consideration as the late medieval period is probably the least popular in FOG. The main competition in FOG is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LOEG) which runs quarterly. The present season started on August 1st so I expect most players will have played most of their games by mid-September (approximately) - so that might be the best time to start recruiting players.

Having said all this, I am not in a position to run another tournament before Xmas. I am already organising NAFF 2011 (finals in October)and I will be holding another Late Medieval invitation tournament (late October/November time).
