An Interesting Problem

Post by Triarii »

I found that using uninstall for a different Slitherene product (Spartan) apparently wiped out my Serials for all my FoG module installations.

I have fixed this but the full story is set out below in case it is of use to you at slitherene and/or anyone has the same probem as me in future.
It may be worth considering replacing the option to add/check serials in the new v1.6.0 introductory (FOGEE Gamemenu) splash screen.

I now have all the FoG add ons and patched to 1.6.0 with the ETE purchase on the 18th.

I carried out some PC housekeeping tonight which included uninstalling the Slitherine game Spartan.
Immediately afterwards I could not access FoG and received the "Game Corrupted Please Reinstall" dialogue box after seeing the new ETE 1.6.0 splash screen and the Slitherene logo.

I tried running the ETE patch again and got "FoG not detected".

Before re-installing everything I decided to inspect the FoG folders and files on my hard drive - everything was there and apparently unchanged on 19/08/11 which was puzzling.

I then opened each of the available executables in turn -
The main file executable ("Field of Glory" 18019kb) went straight to Slitherene/Hexwar logo and then gave the "Game Corrupted". The new shortcuts from the 18/8/11 did the same but via the new 1.6.0 splash screen.
However the old "FoG" executable (2Kb) returned the splash screen wich includes the option to enter serials.
The first attempt to run the game from this screen returned the same "Game corrupted".
However I then selected the 'Serials' button and noticed all were blank and the "already entered" message was missing.
I then re-entered my original FoG serial, and only that serial, in the relevant box.
Clicked the "OK" aka "Play" - lo and behold the game opened as version 1.6.0 but only FoG was available in DAG.
I then re-entered all serials using the old executable and splash screen via the "serials" option. All now works and also does so from main executable and short cuts as well as old executable.

It appears that using the Slitherene Spartan uninstaller somehow wiped the serials or prevented their detection by the FoG executables

I am unable to comment on the old uninstaller issue but to restore fog just download the 160 patch installer from here and use the serials option on the initial menu top restore your serials.

Can you tell us which uninstaller it was - a boxed version, digital download, where you purchased from, and roughly when? It's a very odd issue I've never heard of before!

Hi Iain

It was a boxed version of Spartan.
The boxed set was 'Justplay' branded and dates from about 2006/7.

I had left the game on my hard drive and had an autumn clean. I uninstalled three games and carried out a disc defragmentation.
Spartan
Battle Ground Civil War - Matrix
Uncommon Valour - Matrix

I was playing FoG on the 1.6 patched version immediately before the 'tidy up' but could not load the game immediately after.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. This was actually built in 2003 with a different install package which is obviously not playing nicely. Unfortunately we cant do anythign to fix it in your old boxed version. New version of thegame we currently sell will not do this.

All you can do is reinstall the games you want - sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Iain
Thanks for the reply it wasn't any real inconvenience - once I identified the FoG keys had gone simply re-entering them using the option in the v1.5 splash screen fixed it again without re-installs.
I only mentioned it in case it affects anyone else and to mention to yourselves, at Slitherene, that the 'registration' utility in the v1.5 splash screen proved to be very useful but has now gone from the v1.6 splash screen.
Cheers
