Buccaneers vs Cavalry

Post by ravenflight »

Ok Guys,

I'm going to try some tactics vs Cavalry in the wings.

Lets say I'm shoulder to shoulder with 2 BG's of Superior, Unprotected, Musket, Swordsmen, both with rear support from an Average, Unprotected, Musket Swordsmen, and both with Generals, one of which is a GC... I don't think I can get much of a better setup than that barring terrain - right?

Lets say the enemy is 2 BG's of Cavalry - I don't know the rules or the lists anywhere near well enough, so someone will have to add the cavalry - something akin to Medieval Knights I'm guessing...

Shooting should be reasonable. I think I hit on a 5-6 (I can't understand that - why are cavalry so hard to hit - they're bigger targets than infantry???), and would generally have more dice shooting than they would have bases. At worst I'll get one shot and long range and two shots at short range before they hit right?

Then the Cavalry hit either well formed or disrupted and with a reasonable chance of going in with a base or two missing.

So, with that scenario, what are the chances?

I would think one of two things will happen:

a) Your shots hit and cause death/cohesion loss and you have a chance.

b) Your shots miss and the horse hits with a + pistols + vs MF...and they hack you to pieces.

Unprotected foot is definitely a risk in the open when there is good horse about. (I have the scars to prove it!! )

Thanks Blatherguts... with three shots (one at long range and two at close range - am I right?) what are the chances of option a) (naturally the better option) happening?

I have the scars to prove it too - only one game, but I made mistake in that one so it's hard to learn.

I'm trying to work out a way of making the Buccaneers viable.

If you role dice like my games at Britcon you will kill 2 bases of Gendarmes etc from each BG due to the death roll and still be fragged in the close combat (and yes I did have a GC...)

Not sure how you can get 2 close range shots at him. I would think he moves to 5" and you get a long range shot. If you don't move forward you get charged, so you move to close range and shoot. He then charges. Your saving grace is that after the impact, you get a double POA on the overlap, and your musket cancels out his armor so he is only a single POA on your main body. If you disrupt him in the shooting, you are even in combat.

Still the impact is the thing that hurts. And boy does it hurt.
