Mid Republican Roman Fortified Camp

Post by BrotherCrow »

Just a quick question - is the Mid Republican Roman Fortified Camp compulsory at all times, or is it only when downgrading the legionaries to poor...I don't think it's clear, as the fortified camp is under the "downgrade" heading", and not under the regular/upgrade headings.

I've been doing it at all times, but on looking at the list, I'm not so sure...

Cheers Nick, that's how I'd been playing it. I think it should be moved up a bit in the list though, so it appears in "core troops", rather than "upgrades/downgrades"...

...and it's still a waste of 24 points...!!!

Don't agree it is a waste of points. Phil and Nik have demonstrated how it can be used as an effective pivot or hinge when you have a much smaller army than your opponent.

Its easier to get 7 BG of cavalry around the hinge. 7 BG of legions is a big ask in 3 hours.

Just out of interest, why is the fortified camp compulsory?

Because the Roman army of that period routinely built fortified camps at the end of each day's march when on campaign. They only varied in the depth of the ditch and height of bank depending on the level of threat.

Just play Early Republican Romans with the same miniatures. They don't have to take the camp fortified...

The topic of fortified camps has been raised before. Hopefully it will be addressed in v2. In my view Roman fortified camps should have the additional capability of incorporating the Roman legions light artillery for the points to give it a "zone of control", as its main function of being a last bastion in the face of defeat is not available as you can not occcupy a fortified camp with a battlegroup.

But they aren't the only army that 'routinely built fortified camps', yet as far as i can see there are almost no other armies that have this as compulsory. Just curious why they've been singled out.

Oh yeah, how much. If you want to join the PFJ you've got to really hate the Romans.
