Battle of Boroughbridge 1322

Post by stockwellpete »

Another very important battle in terms of the development of military tactics where the longbow was of paramount importance. Thomas of Lancaster is leading the baronial opposition to his cousin, Edward II but he is eventually trapped on the banks of the River Ure by Andrew Harclay, Sheriff of Carlilse and his army of Cumberland and Westmoreland levies . . .

EDIT: updated to Version 3

I played it on my computer as the rebels and, incredibly, I won. Very well balanced it turns out, without taking too many liberties with history, such as it is being based on the extant accounts of the battle. After playing the scenario I looked up a description of the battle in wikipedia and found that Lancaster divided his attack very much as I did, except that I transferred more ground troops to the river crossing. From the wikipedia accounting of the historical battle, the Loyalists outnumbered the rebels much more than in the scenario. A completely faithful rendition of that version would not have produced a balanced scenario. So, well done once again pete.

Updated to Version 3 . . .

Rebels 294pts, Crown 390pts, 18 turns.

Optional historical rules
i) The rebels must win the battle; if it ends in a draw then the Royalists are victorious. Thomas of Lancaster surrenders the next day to the Royalist army approaching from the south.
ii) The Royalists win immediately if Thomas of Lancaster is killed.

Very hard scenario for the Rebels; best played as a paired game.

My thanks to Edmund_Blackadder for help with the play-testing.
