After reading some things about DRM with the Vista and how the consumer is #@$#@$ treated like a criminal, I was thinking of installing Linux for the first time. So, after a bit of research I found out that there is a program Cedega which lets you play windows games under linux. The list of games is very big and among them I found Gates of Troy. but not spartan or chariots of war.
Any idea if they work?

Well we haven't tested them, but someone else may have tested Troy which is why it is listed...?

Yes, I guess so. Hopefuly within this week I will do the installation so I will let you know. (not crazy about replacing the hard drive of my notebook, time wise and because I am afraid it will die on me any week now.)

Still, I was very surprised to see the huge number of games supported by Cedega. Why don't linux users that try to switch windows users mention it? Let's face it, a large number of users use windows because of the games. Well, i do anyway.

Because there is also a crapload of games that aren't supported by Cedega? And they charge you 3 months in advance? I wish all the donations went towards Wine instead, which is free.. Which is what you should try first, the latest version even supports some DX9 games which Slitherine games probably aren't.

LegionArena requires DirectX 9.0c in order to run, but yeah still kewl about Wine... tbh I quite like Windows (and yes I have used several builds of unix and linux)... so I dont see the point switching across and then just emulating the functionality that I would get for free with Windows XP straight out of the box. But I do see why alot of people like Linux.

Oh, but, I do not like linux. Or the attitude of most users I have met so far. If it was up to me Operating Systems would be like TOS/GEM where it is very very small, graphical interface, in upgradeable ROM etc.
But MS is making me re think about a lot of things. They just feel like the big brother all the time. One of the reasons I haven't instaled SP2 yet (apart that the first time I had to re format the drive), is that they are telling me I have to install all the crap I do not want. Unfortunately since they are enforcing the MUST INSTALL SP2 FOR FURTHER UPDATES, I have been without any further updates. Then we have the DRM. The whole think stinks like STEAM, which btw is the first game for more than 11 years that I haven't bought and not going to as long as it requires it. I don't want to tell "you" when I am going to play or even install the game.
That is why I support cases like Stardock where after you download the game you can just burn in on a cd and not have to worry about connecting to anywhere again, even if you format the drive or something, where I am against all efforts to force you to connect to a server everytime you want to play or re install a game.

I haven't tried cedega yet because A)not enough time, strangely enough, B)I don't think my laptop will be able to handle it.

Efthimios, I agree. Steam is a very bad idea. It is all for the advantage of the game company, and completely at the expense of the legitimate customer.

If game companies think they have a piracy problem, they need to find a way to resolve that without screwing over their paying customers.

I dont like the way Valve went about it with Steam, there surely must have been better ways of doing things rather than resorting to that. Anyways if you hate it so much go get a steam emulator (still pay for the game, just use an emulator instead)

And then what? They release their next game that also needs steam. I am not going to support that freak of nature, not matter how good (or not) games they are making. Thankfuly there are many more companies out there that do get my money. Their loss.

I mean ffs, we are not even talking about a multiplayer only game. I could understand say if it was a MMORPG or counter strike, but HL2 is basicaly a single player game. Anyway I am repeating myself.

Yeah, again I'm with Efthimios. I refuse to buy/play HL2 just because I think it's important not to.

Valve has to be made to understand that some of us just flat refuse to be a part of any such restrictive scheme.

But it's breaking my heart. I loved HL1 so so so much. I played the SP game over and over, bought OpFor and played that over and over. I played about a dozen HL mods when HL was new. I spent untold hundreds of hours mapping for HL.

For creating scripted single-player adventures, the HL1 engine was the best the world had ever seen, when it was new. The entity set was simply unsurpassed in any other engine, at that time.

Multi-player, however, was added as an afterthought, and the HL1 engine was severely sub-optimal for online play.

Efthimios, you can keep Windows XP in your computer, it's a safer bet than Cedega (I think). Games are developed for Windows and it's better not to mess with different platforms. I use XP for games and Ubuntu (debian-like) for everything else. Games will work on XP for a long time...

The nice thing with steam is that it meant my friend and I could jointly use HL2 SP by useing the offline mode to play it. Sure, we couldnt play eachother, but steam made it so that two people could use it at once.
