But your foot was fighting on evens after impact right? Everyone on evens?

The trick is to withstand the impact.
So rear support and also when possible not meeting the salve foot head on, but make them turn. May give you an extra round of shooting and hope to get lucky.

OK so at long range you are 3 dice firing on 5s, they are 2 dice on 4s. Both are averaging 1 hit per go, the Swedes have to close the range to get their ++ salvo foot into combat. At close range you should avarage 3 hits ( 6 dice on 4s) against his 2 dice on 4s averaging 1 hit.

He would probably have to take 1 if not 2 cohesion tests for both the close range rounds he is shot at. See if he still feels like charging then.

But why would the Swedes need to close the range when they shoot at long range the same as normal muskets (1 die per 2 bases) but hit on 4s and their opponents hit on 5s? Savoyard can have at most 5:1 musket/pike ratio, so at long range they can never force a test against a Swedish brigade.

If the Savoyard doesn't want to close to short range then the Swedes have much superior cavalry they can turn the flanks with while the centre plugs away at long range. If he closes to short range then he gets one shot with 5 dice before he gets hit at ++ in impact.

Wouldn't the Swedes usually have regimental guns, giving them 3 dice at long range?

Yes, exactly. That has been our experience. The Swedes are only forced to close to close range if their flanks are threatened by superior cavalry.
