Great game, but still something to miss :)

PC : Turn based WW2 goodness in the mold of Panzer General. This promises to be a true classic!

Great game, but still something to miss :)

Post by Ranta »

Hallo :)

I am, since good old panzer general 3d, a big fan of this game-types. To mention it at first, you did a very good job on panzer corps. The feeling of panzer general returns, polished with many great, new features ( I just love replacements and weather features).

But there are some things, is miss and I would like to hear, if it is realistic, that they are implemented in patches, or later addons or why they are left out (if you don't mind to answer ;) ).

1.) like mentioned in some other posts, units can face (and flexible change) into 2 differnt positions - left an right. Is it possible to add the corresponding positions for the other 4 hexes / positions? I think it realy imporves the "feeling" if the fighting units face eacher other and don't fire into different directions, e.g.

2.) Overrun - Tactics. In old features, a tank could do an overrun attack. Enemies that were to injured/low could be busted away, without resistance (first part) and with the abbility to continue the moving and attacking again, of the corresponding unit. While the first part is still possible (though I didn't get the exact mechanics :) ). The second part is not implemented. Whether this is good or bad, I can't realy decide (I liked both modes, both have their impacts on gameplay), but I would be very interested in your opinion.

3.) Is miss the old horse- wagons for atillery and stuff. On the one hand, horse transports were realy in use, due to a lack of "modern" supply, especially at the beginning of the war. So these unit/feature would be an realistic implementation or addition. E.g. atillery and others can't move further as 1 hex without a mount. The cheapest mount is horse, then truck etc. Horse mounts can move 3 hexes and are buy far the cheapest mounts. They can be purchased normally throughout the whole war and in the beginning, all units not bought by the player himselve are equipped with this horse mount (and so needs to be upgraded) together with most enemy units in the earlier campaign missions.
On the other hand, besides ralism ;), I liked this feature because of it's feeling. You started (in pg 3d) with an "old" army and improved (maybe slowly) to a hightech army. Playing on such difficult supply settings, that the cost for an opel blitz and a horse mount realy made a difference. And sometimes you need that atillery, even you just could afford the horse mount... ;)

4.) I did not find an overview over your campaign statistics, like it was in the old pg. Going into detail, a statitic over unit lost (maybe bought, too) and units killed throughout the whole campaign and some information over which scenario with which results have been played in the campaign up to now. I there a chance this is implementd in future, or did i just failed in finding this? :)

5.) Balance. Up to know, I found the game to be overly "okay" balanced. Is there to possibility to change the balance (unit values, maybe even poisitions and and amounts in the campaign) with further patches? And where could people post their opinion on that maters? E.g. the belgian infantery in the low lands (as mentioned in onther thread) could need some tweaking. Or the relative power of submarines (e.g. in the norwegian scenario - an why do the english forces have the same amounts of submarines then the german?) may be a little over the top, with the 50% evade. Maybe make it 75 % on big ships, 50% on planes and 25 on destroyers, therefore even higher attack values, lower defend values.

6.) Will future patches or addons change the old (german) campaigns? E.g. besides adding new features, adding new scenarios to the campaign (early spain, for a nostalgic pg player, or africa), balancing, repositioning units etc. I would really appreciate that, I mostly think that a longer campaign is a better one, if the single scenarios have a certain quality. I just love the big old custom campaigns with their many, many cenarios. You could take the communities help here and implement the best custom made scenarios over time .... On the other hand, for people who dont like that long campaigns, you could add a option then, whether to start the "short" or the expanded campaigns... :)

Best regards and thanks for your time in advance

Thanks for feedback. :) To answer your questions:

1. The decision to have only two facings was made because the profile view of tanks is usually the best, and also the most characteristic and easiest to recognize. Now it is very easy to see what unit types are where, but if all units are facing in different directions, it can be a mess. Besides, with units facing in different directionsBesides, having only two facings allows to save up quite some memory.

2. We felt that Overrun in PG2 was overpowered and a bit redundant because tanks (especially late ones) are already very good and useful. We wanted to avoid "super units" in the game. As it stands now, each unit has just one attack, and risks some damage in every combat. With these limitations the appearance of super units is unlikely. But overrun would change this dramatically because you not only gain several attacks per turn, but also remove the risk of losses.

3. Horse transports might be a good idea to add in the future.

4. For now you only have casualties statistics invoked with C hotkey. In the future we'll try to extend various statistics available to you.

5. Probably some balance changes in the patches will occur, but it is too early to go into details. Let us wait for more feedback from players. It is fine to post any balance issues on this forum.

6. Again, it is too early to say what changes in the main campaign can happen with patches, but we do not exclude such possibility.

I agree, and I think this may actually one of the main reasons why the later PG games didn't appeal to me. I loved the original PG (and still do), but the move to make graphics more 3D just made it messy, as you say. Somehow it stopped feeling like Panzer General. I vote for sticking to profiles only.

1) I'm completely happy with 2 sides, especially because the direction the unit faces has no impact upon any battle.

2) Maybe overrunning might be a good idea in some scenarios, such as killing units that only have one strenght point left, are suppressed and out of ammo or other rare occurances.

3) Yes, definitetly bring the horse carriages back, with a nice soundfile : )

4) So far I'm quite statisfied with the balancing ( Played 1939 campaing and am in Barbarossa 41 mission now ), but having more custom difficulty settings ( as pointed out in another thread ) would be great.

I guess I'll write a small review with my final opinion when I played through all the campaings.

So far .. I can't stop playing, thanks god I have free until next week hehe ^^
