Pre-Invasion of France 1940: Balkins

Post by Tex01532 »

Thoughts on invading Yugoslavia right after a Polish surrender?

In a normal game the time between the surrender of the Poles and the invasion of France I tend to go by what happened in History and invade Denmark and Norway back-to-back, and develop more troops and tech for the invasion of France. But I have since tried to spice it up and invade Yugoslavia and Denmark at the same time, which has been pretty successful.

Also what's the best way to deal with Greece?

I tried that once when I was trying out various strategies. You can be successful but taking out Yugoslavia before Hungary/Romania activate takes a lot longer and wastes oil/PP's. The strategic advantage is not there either - and then you have to deal with all those partisans without the minor allies to garrison with - so - I dropped that idea early on. Better to wait, build experience, save PP's and oil IMHO.

Greece I still do the old amphibious invasion when the Brits are distracted. Key is to have overwhelming TACs to discourage RN from intervening. Also, you have to get Crete and I've been successful with an airborne drop from North Africa coinciding with the amphibious invasion.

You can invade Yugoslavia in 1939 and even will win one day there, but will be long and costly.
You will fight at bad terrain and during the winter season, also Yugoslavians will use minor country rail network and face you in strength.

Main question is why, since its plain loss of PP oil and manpower, with no gain. Yes you will own 3 PP income from Yugoslavia few more turns, then if you invade in 1940, and what? Will not cover losses in any way.

To conquer Greece you can either land amphs near Athens, or move some tanks from Yugoslavia, using clear terrain path.
I think with latest map changes overland path is more safe and effective...

Also Yugoslavia and Greece have huge partisan forces , which can be annoying. Main idea about conquering Greece and Yugoslavia is to understand, why you do it? Just to release few minor infantry units (well, you will need more of same units to garrison occupied countries, then you get) and to get few PP income (it may never cover even casualties for conquest) is not enough good reason.

It could be interesting to have two historical events - "Mussolini declares spezzeremo le reni alla Grecia" and "Yugoslavian coup d'etat" but with some probabilities to happen, in this way we could have some uncertainty.
