Modder Questions

Post by StevenCarleton »

  • It looks like you're not using the map editor to do your changes. Are the GS map changes done in code?
  • There doesn't seem be an OOB list in the txt settings files. I guess these are in the scn files?
  • I'd like to mod the initial strength of the Soviet units to better reflect the devastation of Stalin's purges. Ideally, all units should be negatively affected. Should I lower Quality or Organization levels, or something else?

We've done this via efficiency loss of 30 at the start of Barbarossa. When you attack in 1941 the Soviets are on their knees with such an attack and you have to run asap to save your army. If you defend you will be crushed. Do you really need to weaken the Russians more?
Shouldn' the Germans have some kind of challenge in 1941? It was not a cakewalk for them to get to Moscow. They took losses too and in December 1941 the Russian offensive inflicted a lot of German losses.

We've using a modified version of the editor to edit the map and scenarios. This is where the OOB is done.

The unit stats are done in unit.txt and technology.txt.

If you want temporary changes to stats then you need to code in Java, updating the class files.

Thanks for your reply!

My impression of the histories I've read is that the affects of the purges lasted well into 42. It took time to retrain officers and redo the fighting manuals. Rokossovsky and other officers had to be pulled out of a gulag.

The Germans' problems had alot to do with logistics. The Soviet rail system was heavily damaged and the remaining track wasn't compatible with European rolling stock. Also, Russia had a very underdeveloped road system, slowing the German advance. I have some ideas on how to model this in CEAW.

I would also like to penalize the Soviets for giving up European Russia without a fight. If the Soviets defend their Western districts, they buy time to evacuate industry, resources and manpower eastward. They also get more time for "Scorched Earth".

I just wanted an OOB so I could easily see each minor nation's forces without declaring war...

I thought only you guys had permission from Johann to modify his .class files.

What you do with the class files for personal use is something you decide for yourself. Nobody would know if you made modifications to files on your own PC.

If you want to publish a mod to the public then you need permission from the company owning the rights to CeaW, i. e. Slitherine. So you need to contact Iain at Slitherine and ask for permission if you want to make a mod.

Okay, good to know. I read back when I installed the vanilla version that we could not disassmble the code. Perhaps the license agreement is different now?

I edited your post. The original license agreement has not changed and is still in force. What you do on your own computer is your business but what you make available to others has to be in compliance with the license agreement. Any discussion to the contrary is not appropriate.

As there is no more to add on this subject ... I'm locking this thread.
