Undo feature?

Post by Solaristics »

Hi, I can't see any way of undoing a move, and I read a thread dated a few years back talking about this and why it wasn't implemented initially and the constant save work around. Did it change in the latest version? Personally I find it very frustrating since it is a common feature on similar games. Thanks!

This has been discussed on the years in several different threads. The general conclusion, or reasoning, reached in all them was that being able to undo a move would be an exploit with respect to the fog of war. Even if your moved uncovered nothing new the fact that it uncovered nothing new is information.

It is of course the devs prerogative to make such a decision, although I disagree with it. The same exploit is possible by saving and reloading the game file, and excluding the undo feature just inconveniences the honest player. Any way, I have no interest in opening the debate again if it has been decided by the devs, as reasonable people can disagree on this matter.

I would support this too if it was an option that both players agreed to at the start. Seems like this would require changes to the engine. Would be a nice feature for the noobies or for those of us who play late into the night and start doing stupid stuff!

Definitely vote in favor of Undo. Can't tell you how many times I've accidentally moved a unit to the wrong place after spending an hour plotting my turn. :-\

Maybe have undo enabled if you are playing against the AI in the next version of GS.

In the old Panzer General/Allied General games (anyone remember those?) there was an undo feature that worked only if that move didn't uncover any 'fog of war' hexes/units. In other words, you could undo any move over 100% known & revealed territory. It would be nice to have such a feature in CEAW.

I also think that it's ethically sound to reload a turn to recover from an "oops" move so long as you don't gain any advantage in any way from doing so--i.e. the advantage of scouting out areas, getting better combat results, etc. I have sometimes been forced to reload a turn due to a power outage or other unavoidable interruption, and in those cases I do my best to duplicate the original moves. I'm sure we've all been in that situation before.
