Realistic unit names and sizes?

Post by MANOWARarg »

Hi all!

Great to see the work you're doing on PC. I'm a fan of the Panzer Gen series like forever...and this new game It's simply a one I woudn't like to miss.

I have some doubts, I hope you'll be able to help me with. I'm not sure if someone posted them before, So I might just open a new topic. If there have been posted before, please accept my apologies.

As far as I've seen in preview pictures, units come themselves named as "1st Tiguer", "20th Shermann" and so on. This is like PG1, and to be honest, is one of the few things I didn't like about that game. I prefer some degree of realism on scenarios...

For example, In a scenario in Afrika, I would like to see "15th Pz" or "8th Armored", "ANZAC Div" and so on...

I know it is possible to change unit's names. But what I'm wondering about it two things:

1) In single player scenarios, coudn't units come themselves pre-named as real ones were? At least on a more or less...aproximately realistic way. For example, I don't want EVERY REGIMENT, BRIG, and so on. But, If I'm fighting on Moscow, I would like to fight some units from the Movska Corps... If I'm allied on the Ardennes, I would like to use 101ºst Airbone different regiments, and so on...

2) Also. I would like to know, if It'll be possible to implement a sistem to automatically name units when you buy them, let's say...like a unit name's poll. Thus, If I buy a Panzer IV, it wound't be named as "1st Panzer IV" but as "1sr Panzer Abteuilung" or Regiment, instead.
This way, It would make the feeling of comanding such units much more realistic, in my opinion.

I knoe there must be a limit to realism ( as this is not the Gary Grisby's series) but I think a change like that woudn't take much effort to introduce, and It would help improve gaming experience for those players -like myself- who prefer just a little more realism than in the PG1.

If necessary, I would be glad to help in sending you some unit's list in HTML, for you to use, If you think that may help.

ALSO:

Wich would be the estimated unit size? I know different maps would have different sizes, but just aproximately, what are we talking about? Regiments/Batallions? Divisions?

Hope this questions doesn't botter you. Keep up the good work!

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome,

About the unit naming:

Some will like your approach, other might prefer as it is now and again others use only nick names, prefer all fantasy or only can work with pure historic unit names.

We also have some legal and age-rating laws in Europe, who are very strict on anything that is German and WW2 related. Some units and names are forbidden and could potentially hurt the sale of the game as we simply would be taken off the market. And of course localization would also become a lot more complicated.

Now to solve this the easiest way is to give the player total freedom, so he can rename any unit into what he likes using Alt+N as a hotkey.

About unit size:

The game is really abstract, so the individual units represent between a Battalion upto a Corps, it depends a bit per scenario to be honest.

Unit names

Post by panzerlehr »

LordZim:

IMHO not putting the effort into naming units at a Divor Korps level in the scens seems a bit of a cop-out. Naming restrictions in the EU aside, there are simple workarounds to this. E.g. Assuming use of the term SS is prohibited on a unit such as 12th SS Pz Div then one could use 12th HJP or even 12th Elite Pz. Having designed many scens over the years this is a fairly simple task especially at the division/korps level when the research required is not as difficult as dealing with Kompanie or Abt scale.

Question: If as you indicate, editing unit names is left to the users of the game, then would such customized scenarios be available for play as PBEM on your servers or are we stuck with the generic "Sherman3" or "Tiger1" names of the unit types?

Regards,

G.

If not already in the game: please add an ingame screen/overview that lists all the short-cut keys. This would make it much easier to memorize them.

Furthermore: I really like that cities are marked by green hexes on the strategic map. However, it might be even better if cities and airfields are marked by different colors, because that would make planning moves a lot easier.
