Multiplayer Refresher

For anyone curious, if you want to set up a specific game with a specific person, you can always password your game, and send your preferred opponent the password.
More than this though, you can also use the GAME DESCRIPTION window to inform players of your intention, or as a means of marking your private game.

For example, you may wish to play The Frozen North with 2 different people, so you lock them both. Problem is, they look identical, even though they may have different passwords! So this is another case where the description window is very handy, you can say "Joe's Rematch" or "Game for Bob" to help other players identify and locate the game you mean for them to play with you!

The description text is also very handy for asking anyone for a game, because you can openly state the type of game you are looking to play, even while you've issued a challenge to potentially anyone who may want to play your game!

I have a few questions regarding comms in MP:

- If you want to play a specific person, whose email you don't know, how do you communicate to them the password that you have placed on the game? Do you just PM them on this board?

- the 'Claim' button becomes available after 30 days of inactivity in a game, I believe. Who does it become available to, though? Could the person who has not played their turn claim the game?

- I read on another thread that a ladder may be established. I like the idea of a ladder but what anti-cheating measures have been taken? Ladders tend to bring out the compettive spirit in people (not a bad thing), which sometimes becomes stronger than honesty and integrity (a bad thing).

- the Results tab in MP seems to keep games for a set period of time as a couple of games that were appearing on mine have disappeared. Is this a bug? I would like to see all the games I have played. In addition, why is the game result missing? A simple DV, MV or L would be better than nothing. I understanding you can go into the last turn but who wants to do that for every game you've played?

These things do not take away from the very functional approach to MP of PzC - it's great and easy to use. My questions come from many discussions regarding ladders, cheating and PBEM in PG2 and a desire to deal with them before they become issues.

1. You either have to already be playing another game with them, and you can communicate with them in that chat log, or yes, people will have to organize on this forum.

2. Claim is available to the player who is not in possession of the game. If you pass your game so it's your opponents turn, and they are idle for 30 days, you may claim it.

3. The server detects modified scenarios, modified equipment files, modified rule files, and each of these violations is flagged with the red text you currently notice in the challenge lists. Anyone using a clt alt delete cheat to 'redo' their turn is being tracked by the server, and abuse of this nature is very easy to detect.

4. I agree, the result tab should track this better, but there might be a better alternative for this entirely coming soon (maybe here on the Slitherine site, as they have for other games of theirs)... a place that is designed to track a player's wins and losses, while the game results page is mainly for storing a game so player's can replay the actual turn and see the conclusion on their own.

Well, it's not useful to any plays if only the SERVER can detect this.
Back in BF-Academy I always was shutting down in games in order to get the re-player to display again and so on. Opponents were never informed of this to my knowledge, and I felt it was one of the biggest potential exploits, etc. Anyhow, every ladder club I've been a member with that has a PBEM type system, has always had someone taking advantage of some exploit. It's unavoidable, and part of the problem why I quit TOAW rankings.

We are currently tracking the issue so we have all the data and just need to decide how best to use it. If you are cheating we know! The infrastucture is there so it is not a big job to add the UI & feedback layer on top.

Actually, an opponent I am playing currently, but in a different game (and probably earlier version of PC), was kind enough to inform me by email that he'd CTD'd at one point and had to redo much of his turn. I guess this would be flagged as a CTRL+ALT+DEL 'cheat' (something which never occurred to me - but then, maybe that's just because I don't think about these things  ). Anyway, if he hadn't told me, I would have had no way of knowing.

In other games I have played, there have been cheats, and they really do destroy the game. Most often than not, they are not particularly stealthy about it, and end up with highly improbable scores. Any method at all of preventing cheating is always a good thing.
