Battle of Marathon 490BC (FPSC game 1)

Post by Archie »

Battle of Marathon

Date: August/September 490BC.......Location: Marathon, Greece

Combatants:
9000 Citizens of Athens, aided by 1000 Plataea
Commanded by Miltiades the Younger & Callimachus

Against:
The Persian Empire, Estimate (varies from 20,000-100,000) 25,000 Infantry, 1000 Cavalry
Commanded by Datis & Artaphernes

A very good account of the battle can be found on Wikipdia, see quote below.
The Battle

The distance between the two armies at the point of battle had narrowed to "a distance not less than 8 stadia" or about 1,500 meters.[72] Miltiades ordered the two tribes that were forming the center of the Greek formation, the Leontis tribe led by Themistocles and the Antiochis tribe led by Aristides, to be arranged in the depth of 4 ranks while the rest of the tribes at their flanks were in ranks of 8.[73][74] Some modern commentators have suggested this was a deliberate ploy to encourage a double envelopment of the Persian centre. However, this supposes a level of training that the Greeks did not possess.[75] There is little evidence for any such tactical thinking in Greek battles until Leuctra in 371 BC.[76] It is therefore probable that this arrangement was made, possibly at the last moment, so that the Athenian line was as long as the Persian line, and would not therefore be outflanked.[46][77]

When the Athenian line was ready, according to one source, the simple signal to advance was given by Miltiades: "At them".[46] Herodotus implies the Athenians ran the whole distance to the Persian lines, shouting their ululating war cry, "Ελελευ! Ελελευ!" ("Eleleu! Eleleu!").[72] It is doubtful that the Athenians ran the whole distance; in full armour this would be very difficult.[78] More likely, they marched until they reached the limit of the archers' effectiveness, the "beaten zone", (roughly 200 meters), and then broke into a run towards their enemy.[78] Another possibility is that they ran UP TO the 200 meter-mark in broken ranks, and then reformed for the march into battle from there. Herodotus suggests that this was the first time a Greek army ran into battle in this way; this was probably because it was the first time that a Greek army had faced an enemy composed primarily of missile troops.[78] All this was evidently much to the surprise of the Persians; "...in their minds they charged the Athenians with madness which must be fatal, seeing that they were few and yet were pressing forwards at a run, having neither cavalry nor archers".[79] Indeed, based on their previous experience of the Greeks, the Persians might be excused for this; Herodotus tells us that the Athenians at Marathon were "first to endure looking at Median dress and men wearing it, for up until then just hearing the name of the Medes caused the Hellenes to panic".[72] Passing through the hail of arrows launched by the Persian army, protected for the most part by their armour, the Greek line finally collided with the enemy army.

Holland provides an evocative description:
"The enemy directly in their path...realised to their horror that [the Athenians], far from providing the easy pickings for their bowmen, as they had first imagined, were not going to be halted...The impact was devastating. The Athenians had honed their style of fighting in combat with other phalanxes, wooden shields smashing against wooden shields, iron spear tips clattering against breastplates of bronze...in those first terrible seconds of collision, there was nothing but a pulverizing crash of metal into flesh and bone; then the rolling of the Athenian tide over men wearing, at most, quilted jerkins for protection, and armed, perhaps, with nothing more than bows or slings. The hoplites' ash spears, rather than shivering...could instead stab and stab again, and those of the enemy who avoided their fearful jabbing might easily be crushed to death beneath the sheer weight of the advancing men of bronze."[80]

The Athenian wings quickly routed the inferior Persian levies on the flanks, before turning inwards to surround the Persian centre, which had been more successful against the thin Greek centre.[81] The battle ended when the Persian centre then broke in panic towards their ships, pursued by the Greeks.[81] Some, unaware of the local terrain, ran towards the swamps where unknown numbers drowned.[82][83] The Athenians pursued the Persians back to their ships, and managed to capture seven ships, though the majority were able to successfully launch.[48][84] Herodotus recounts the story that Cynaegirus, brother of the playwright Aeschylus, who was also among the fighters, charged into the sea, grabbed one Persian trireme, and started pulling it towards shore. A member of the crew saw him, cut off his hand, and Cynegirus died.[84]

Herodotus records that 6,400 Persian bodies were counted on the battlefield, and it is unknown how many more perished in the swamps.[85] The Athenians lost 192 men and the Plataeans 11.[85] Among the dead were the war archon Callimachus and the general Stesilaos.[84]

Some thoughts on the scenario

Post by Ferb »

Some thoughts on the scenario. Having just played this with Archie (thanks for the games) it seems that initial impact favours the Persians but in the longer fight they're toast. This seems to contradict the historical accounts (although as anyone who has read Herodotus will know some accounts border on fantasy). I'm assuming the advantage in initial impact is to simulate bows shooting as the troops engage. Given that it's almost impossible to win vs a human opponent as Greeks I think the Greeks should be given more troops (possibly skirmishers) to slow down the Persians getting behind them, or reduce the effectiveness of shooting during the charge.
Of course having said that now everyone will show me up by winning as the Greeks :-)

A couple of fun games. My cowardly Persians ran from the Greeks while shooting them with pointy sticks, only daring to attack when they were weakened. A victory for prudence over courage :-)
However, my Greeks charged into the fray as if they were led by Achilles himself, smiting the Persians when they could. Aided as they were by the Gods themselves who must have ensorcelled the Persian commander on occasion causing him to err with his orders. Alas to no avail as the Persian numbers finally told and the Greeks succumbed.

As the Athenians I swung to the right in the vain hope I might threaten the Persian camp. The Persians reacted by advancing. I was able to charge home against some Persian archers, but had to contact a few Persian spearmen to keep my left flank secure, unsurprisingly my left flank collapsed.

As the Persians I retreated and fired a few volleys and was able to get around the advancing Athenian flanks.

It's always a wry moment when a 6 point Persian Defensive Spear MF beats up a 10pt ARM Hoplite. Also noted a fewf times that steady units fragmented when a unit next to them routed.

I might have a go at re-designing this battle so that the hoplites don't get so easily flanked to see if it makes a difference to the end result.

Have had a go at re-designing this battle. Solved the width issue, but created a depth issue for the Persians - will have to double the height of the map! Sigh have to start from scratch. At least I have the OOB already done.

Marathon for me will always be one of the most boring battles to refight - tried it in several versions of boardgames & I'm afraid I cannot find anything positive abut it.

Persians (deeter) 2/22 WIN vs. Athens (petergarnett) 13/9
Persians (petergarnett) 22/22 vs. Athens (deeter) 10/9 DRAW

Thanks for the games, Peter!

Marathon 490BC not really a multiplayer scenaro... OK against the AI as a puzzler...

The next one will be Akragas 406BC... think that will be more challenging...

Have concerns about Crocus Plains 353BC as the Macedonians are too strong in my opinion..so would like to give that a miss...

Would welcome others opinions.... concerning the next two scenaros....
