Little Things to Fix

Post by Sarconix »

Hello all!

I am finally getting a chance to try the beta. My schedule was pretty open when I signed up, but got busy when I actually got the invite. Realizing my comments about major changes probably can't be addressed now, here are several little things I would like to see fixed.

I will post more here as I find more. Overall, my impressions are positive and I look forward to the release!
  • The launcher should select the desktop resolution by default. On my machine it selected 1024x768, lower than the desktop resolution. As an aside, I use dual monitors, and it seems to run fine (on the main display only). That made it handy to take notes on the second display.

In the launcher resolution list and in the scenario editor, you use a default Windows font that looks out of place and seems sloppy. I think it originated in Windows 3.0, so it also feels really "old." Change this to just about anything else.

The library is nice, and I love the cross sections. Where did those come from? The equipment names are in ALL CAPS in list; it would look better with mixed case.

The manual is missing from the library. I assume that will be fixed! A PDF manual would be nice too.

Where are the rest of the units in the library? I only see armor.

Is there any way to see the library entry for a unit, linked from the unit itself? I couldn't find it, and it would be quite handy.

The fancy campaign selection font is quite hard to read. It's OK for the game logo, but not for essential text, i.e. the names of the campaigns.

Are the scenarios getting descriptions? I see a space for it in the UI.

When the tutorial messages are displayed, scrolling and zooming with the keyboard is disabled, but scrolling with the mouse does work. This should consistently work or not, i.e. are the tutorial messages modal or not?

For the first tutorial, I received no messages for a while once I was told to start moving units. After I ended the turn, they started appearing again, including the "all units have moved, now you should end the turn" message, which should have appeared earlier.

As soon as I tried to make my first move with a unit (armor), the game crashed! I started over again, and it did not happen again. Any idea what caused that?

I like the idea of the combat details screen (before attacking), but it looks and feels different from the rest of the UI. Icons and tooltips would help here.

Please allow double-clicking to load a save game on the new load screen. I see others have mentioned this too.

I find the gold-on-gray icons a bit hard to read; they sort of run together. Some spot color might help here.

The scenario editor buttons need tooltips. They are mostly straightforward buttons, but every bit helps.

I loved looking at the list of unit icons in the scenario editor, like a WWII toy box. However, there appear to be a large number of duplicate unit icons, e.g. several identical trains. Are they supposed to be different?
Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions or comments about this.
