Mughal list suggestions

Post by Samei00 »

Hi
Designing a Mughal list and other posts say FOG REN is all about winning the central infantry battle and you can get away with small cavalry forces.
So minimum 3 BGs 4 sup cavalry, 2 light arty stands, 4 BGs 6 avge archers 2 BGs avge arquebusiers
Now I was initially getting 6 heavy arty in 2 BGs of 3 with about 8 FFs and 3 BGs of warriors with lt spear, one of them average to support the big guns and 2 poor to support the archers and arquebusiers.
Would get an IC to hold the centre together and help getting the right terrain and 2 TCs.
Deployment would be keeping cavalry deep and or two on one flank , one on other with light arty.
Infantry in one big firepower line either side of arty and just shooting shooting shooting.
I was toying with giving up the poor warriors and / or having only 4 big guns maybe even making them medium and giving up the FFs so they can pivot and get a wider range of fire. With points saved can get a BG of average cavalry or Rajputs or elephants
Any suggestions?

Don't put too much faith in the arty, you will likely need 5's to hit so don't expect a lot from them. Sometimes I have gotten lucky other games they don't hit a thing. Might want to spend those points on some extra foot dudes or more horse to force the flank, if you can something which we have never managed to do so far. Our battles usually end up with an infantry slaughter in the middle by the time one of the flanks collapses

I think large amounts of artillery are quite a bit different than a single 2 base battery.

Getting hit with 4 dice for 6 rounds of firing is far more trouble than people realize especially for 6 base average units. A slightly better than average luck and you can make that unit non-functioning by the time the real fighting starts.

Artillery...because I'm worth it?

Yeah bit worried if arty is worth it. Would be a quarter of my points including FFs and obligatory light arty. Can't even afford to do a "Bod" and buy two sets of FFs so opponent doesn't know where the big guns will deploy.
For a quarter of the points the big guns better be Mjolnir and only taking out one or two BGs is not really worth it. They need to be able to smash the enemy centre enough so that when they come in the range of 6 shooting BGs the enemy infantry will crumble. Isn't 4 archer and 2 arquebusier BGs with 2 poor warriors BGs for rear support and one warrior BGs to support the arty enough then?

Hi,

One Scots Covenanter general at our club has caused great execution with a massed battery of 4 heavy guns backed up by massed light guns. Being heavy they have caused a lot of damage from the first round especially on 4 strong cavalry formations( he tends to have good die roles). Looking at the Mughal army list I suspect you will need to take as much artillery as possible to dominate the centre whilst your cavalry engages on the flanks. Two batteries of 4 & 2 heavy guns looks a good tactic and will have the range from turn 1.. The interesting point is if you intend to use your elephants or have worked out how to use them in FOGR.

Mughal list

Nellies in fog REN look vulnerable. Historically from 16th cen I think they were kept as a reserve used against penetrating cavalry or in shock role. In Afghanistan in one battle they were used to push back mounted archers to clear a path in a valley.
