Transfer, A New Deployment Option?

Post by AgentX »

I love how the game is coming along and the new changes/upgrades. Heroes and awards were great additions. So was the Movement arrows. I also like how, in the campaign, you can now carry a larger core army than deployment slots that are available for a scenario. This allows you to pick & choose the units you want to match the particular scenario you're facing. Lots of enemy planes on this map, better deploy extra fighters and AA. Great idea and it opens up more strategy options for each scenario.

So, I thought there could be an extra deployment option added, that, for now, I'll call Transfer (the hotkey could even be T, if not currently used). This would work like the Disband function except that it will "transfer" your unit back into your Reserves. Once you use this new option, a deployment slot will be opened that you can now deploy one of your other Reserve units to the map. So, say I have 2 AA units no longer needed because the enemy air force has been eliminated, I could transfer those units and bring up 2 other more useful units from my Reserves. Or, I got a badly damaged unit and don't have the Prestige to waste on reinforcing it, but don't want to lose the unit and it's experience. Transfer it and bring up another unit instead.

As a penalty for the option, I have two ideas. One is that it could take two turns to complete. So, say on Turn 5, I want to transfer my 2 AA units. That would happen on Turn 5 and I would have to wait till Turn 6 to deploy the Reserves (at any Axis controlled city or airfield) and Turn 7 to actually use the new units. That's kind of complicated, so, the other possibility is make the new units deploy at the original deployment zone (by now, probably the rear of the battlefield) and make them wait one turn to use (so, Turn 5, I transfer the unneeded AA and deploy Reserve units at original deployment area; Turn 6, units are now active). Coming from the rear guard would imitate the "Reserve" nature of the new units and would probably be the better option.

It would be impossible to balance scenarios or campaigns.

Really, PG managed to do it (at least PG III had it). I remember Reserve units coming by a certain turn and they always came up at the rear of the battlefield. I don't think it would be that hard to balance as it would take a turn or two to complete the transfer. Plus, they will be coming from the very rear of the map and take a couple of turns to get to the frontlines. I don't think this option would be necessary for the Scenario mode, but would be really nice for the Campaigns since those are where your being allowed more units than are deployable.
