Unable to play smoothly

I'm sorry to say that more and more often when it is AI's turn the game freezes (beyond Jan 1941 - practically every turn)

Sound is on but the rest is frozen.

My specs:

OS - MS Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz
RAM - 4.0 GB DDR2
Motherboard - ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5Q-PRO (LGA 775)
Graphic card - 1024 MBGeForce GTX 285 (ASUStek Computer Inc)

Help, please !!!!

Try it with both sound and music off. I seem to remember seeing some posts about conflicts with the vanilla game and certain sound cards.

Do you have the latest Java installed?

Are you running windowed or full screen?

How is the disk space? Have you thought of upgrading to Windows 7 ?

Have you tried to play a HotSeat game against yourself if you get a freeze or slow down?

it seems that upgrading java solved the problem.

I played 5/6 turns without any problem now.
