Cavalry break-off and shooting into melee

Post by gollummen »

Hello everybody

I just bought FOG and I am having a blast!

I have been missing a simple, fast system that handles all of the ancient and medieval period.

I do have a few questions:

When will cavalry break-off from a melee? I seem to have my cavalry break-off from fights they are winning, creating gabs in my line.
What can I do to prevent it?

Could it be possible to have missile troops fire into melee randomizing the hits or whatever?
I often have missile troops without targets when the melee starts.

I think the answer to the first question was recently discussed and the answer is in the last post of this thread viewtopic.php?t=24257

Missiles can't randomly fire into melee. The only advice I can give is to generally do missile attacks 1st (at least in the 1st part of the game) before units engage in melee. If you do the melee 1st often available targets will disappear. In the latter stages then it may be that missile attacks may be worth doing later because if there are routs then targets may appear.

Certainly once melee is well in progress the missile units will have to move further for targets, maybe even going round the flanks to find them.

Thanks, Morbio

So cavalry tries to break-off to get ready for a new charge (they do well in the impact stage of the melee?).

Seems fair.
Maybe I should keep my cavalry on the far wings and protect my heavy and medium infantry with light infantry to halt the attackers for a while.
Missiles can't randomly fire into melee.
But it would be cool

Another stupid question:

What are the effects of loosing a general?

The unit that the general was in have to take a morale test, what else?

I believe that any adjacent units also take a morale test or lose a level (or two) of cohesion.

You also no longer have a commander to support nearby troops for all that entails; anarchy tests, morale tests, double moves, etc.

The unit the commander in reverts back to a basic unit rather than fighting as a unit one level higher - this affects re-rolls.
