15mm 1690 Europeans

Post by rbodleyscott »

Can anyone tell me:

1) Which manufacturers make 15mm figures suitable for 1690s Western European armies?

2) Which would you recommend?

Thanks

I am looking at these:

http://www.vexillia.ltd.uk/venexia/shop15_louis.html

They cover 1667 - 1697, I am looking at them for 1683 Austrians and Germans. They look very nice, google Venexia for the Italian site which has colour photos. I have some of their Ottomans which are very nice andf service from Vexilla is superb,

Essex
Donnington
Magister Militum

The Magister Militum (League of Augsburg range) lists the manufacturer as Hallmark. They do seem to have a fair variety of figures. Donnington has a number of lines, not sure which is best or most suitable for the period. Essex doesn't appear to have any variety of figures within the pack, so the choices are limited. I haven't seen any of these and except for Essex there are no pictures on any of the websites.

I think this period is in need of a new complete 15/18mm range. Front rank does them in 25 and Pendraken is putting out a new 10mm range.

Although I prefer floppy hats rather than the the tricorne of the WSS, Blue Moon (Old Glory 25) has put out a very nice fairly complete 18mm Malburian range recenty. I would be/am tempted to use these figures.

These are true 15mm figures and quite slim - they look tiny compared to any modern range, but are quite nice figures but not in animated poses.

One possibilty for Essex is to mix tricorne hats in the same BG with floppy hats, for variety. Another idea is to mix in a few ECW figures with the above, and paint the coat as if a waistcoat.

The BG would be painted uniformly, but would contain a mix of hats and figures without outer coats.

Old Glory may have some - they appear on some parts of their website but not others. There are links on the 15mm Renaissance suppliers section of my site.

I should be able to post pics of some of the Essex and Hallmark ones this weekend

Old Glory doesn't. The army listed as Early Louis XIV are from their TYW range.

If only a company like Khurasan would do a proper range

I just have so much going on Delbruck, and only so much money. It takes quite a while to earn enough money to make a range of 15s.

The big problem is that customers have a certain expectation of pricing for 15mm models. But the cost of metal is going up and up, and as my prices are holding the line, I am making less and less on each sale. With Colonial Spanish and Thirty Years War Central Europeans (1600-1638) underway, I have many demands on the meagre income from sales.

TYW and Colonial Spanish took precedence because IMO there are several decent ranges out there from which to make late 17th C Europeans, but Colonial Spanish in their rather peculiar dress, as well as TYW specifically for early-mid war Germans, are not really available. (No slights meant at any lines here, I'm just looking at the source images and then the models.)

I would love to make Louis XIV's army from the 1670s-90s as well, and think I'd do a fairly good job at depicting them correctly. The money's just not there. :(

Update -- I couldn't resist, I just commissioned some French in the post-1683 uniform (so the waist belt rather than the cross straps). They will have the late pattern matchlock, plug bayonets and only partly folded hats, so will be suitable for the period 1683-1698 or so, basically the War of the League of Augsburg.

This is just going to be an exploration, so I'm not committing to a full line. It will be an infantry unit, so four poses of musketeers, two poses of pike, an officer, standard, drummer, and a grenadier. They will be charging with the plug bayonet in.

Very good to hear Mr K. A couple of comments/questions:

Will these be 18mm like the TYW figures?

Except for the shoulder ribbons I don't think the French were that much different than most other European musketeers (with some exceptions). Unless a full range is planned it might be better to forgo the ribbons and make the figures more generic. It is easy enough to add ribbons on a 15/18mm figure.

Although I understand the reason for putting French in an attack pose - I think post people prefer march attack. In my opinion an attacking pose is always to be avoided, especially for pikes :!:

"Will these be 18mm like the TYW figures? "

They will be 15mm to the eye, like most of my models. I only made the TYW models bigger so they could be mixed with other popular lines of "15mm" models, and because, by a happy accident, Mike already had dollies in big 15mm (18mm scale).

There are a few other uniform differences between the French and other nations in the 1680s-90s. If you look at, say, a British cut of uniform, and then a French, you can usually spot which is which even without the epaulette on the right shoulder, and without colour. But as you say probably not very noticeable in 15mm scale. And it's a lot easier to scrape off an epaulette from the right shoulder than it is to add one, so these will be made with epaulettes.
