First impressions

Post by Alicuza »

So I've dove right into the Poland campaign and I must say I am impressed.

I love the simplicity of the design and the similarities to PGF.

Only thing I am missing as of now are custom hotkeys and the ability to toggle between movement/attack and selecting between the two mouse buttons.

PS: I hope this is the right place for feedback.

Thx for feedback, and yes, it is the right place. :) Could you please elaborate on "ability to toggle between movement/attack and selecting between the two mouse buttons"? I'm not sure I understood your idea.

As of now you select with the left mouse button and move/attack with the right. I would like to be able to set my own mouse buttons for these actions. The simplest alternative would be the ability to swap them (left for attack/move and right for select).

Hope that clears it up.

Here's my first impressions:

Easy install, but the game wouldn't run under Windows 7 until I granted it admin rights. I have a seperate partition on my hard drive for games only and installed to that, so it wasn't installed in the default folder.

The graphics for the game intro and front selection screens are excellent and fit really well with the setting. The music is also well chosen and not intrusive.

I chose to play the tutorial campaign with all default settings to begin with. Even on 1680x1050, the game screen looks great and scales very well. No problems at all. The gui is very familiar! As a lefty, it would be nice to have a choice of the command panel on the left side of the screen. I love the map and unit graphics. Top notch. The command panel is intuitive and easy to use. Not too many icons that a novice would be overwhelmed and just enough to cover the functions needed to play.

The tutorial boxes were short and sweet, which is always welcome, and covered the basics nicely.

I sailed through the first scenario and think it's good you made it so easy, the point being to teach someone how to play at this stage, rather than pose a challenge. The scenario is well designed with ease in mind and a gentle intro to the units.

My only very minor criticism at this stage, is that I think the hexes aren't quite well defined enough to see without looking very closely. I realise they are set to "subtle", but they are still almost too faint to see. A touch more and they'd be perfect. That's very subjective, I know :-)

At the start of the second scenario, the tutorial box entitled "Replacements" popped up on screen, but the main map was still black, with the text "Deploy Your Troops" showing. I had to dismiss the tutorial box and then click the screen to show the map. I don't think this tutorial box should show until the map is displayed as it refers to units on the map iirc.

That's as far as I've got so far with the game. Very, very nice so far!

Hope that helps. :D

initial impressions - written down as I go along

installation was painless - took ~30 seconds

registration also painless

game start splash screens are suitably quick (I let them run...) and interesting for the first time viewer. glad they can be escaped out of...

Main menu attractive and uncluttered

selected library first - Manual Overview - nothing there; oh well

looked at the equipment - very nice; particularly like the interior view - only Tiger I is present though

started 1936 Fall Weiss - left difficulty at default

typo in Tutorial Message 1 'most pat' should be 'most part'

in general I liked the tutorial messages - though for the most part the interface is completely intuitive. plays enough like Panzer General that all the concepts are familiar.

map is very nice - level of detail is just right for me. I particularly like the strategic overview map. If I had to quibble about anything I'd say that the map is so dark that at the higher resolutions (via the mouse wheel) it's hard to see the units.

somewhere along the way I got my screen resolution changed; took a while to remember the mouse scroll wheel. I like it best with the screen zoomed in to the max; ie largest hex sizes

I don't see where the range of the arty is specified. I figured out it's 3 hexes but this should be noted somewhere. same for armor (?)

took a little under an hour to finish the first scenario. the default difficulty level is probably too easy even for a first-timer as I made all the usual mistakes but still got a decisive victory with 12 turns remaining - I didn't lose a unit though I came close a few times, mostly through carelessness. I think I'll restart at higher difficulty

look and feel is very similar to PG. So far I see a lot to like and nothing to dislike. It's the perfect kind of game for a quick after-dinner session without the need to take up the whole evening.

performance was more than adequate (practically instantaneous) - my system is a Dell Studio XPS with a 64-bit 2.67Ghz processor and 12 GB of RAM running Windows 7

except for the range determination I can't think of anything in the UI i'm missing. As I said earlier, I think it's pretty straightforward and intuitive.

really nice job...

first thing: i will thanks for the opportunity to test the game :D

the game goes quickly when loading, not so saving games... with an old pc as mine

the game mechanics seems to be good, ... maybe refined graphic effects?!

i think the work you have made was sure well done, the top under many points of view and Panzer General feeling was mantained

a question...: can i sell my units between the levels?

excuse me for my poor english.

the game seems really fine. i have played the first mission in poland, at standar level.

the UI is very intuitive and the tutorial messages are good.

i think that a couple of label/icons could help the casual players,

-a icon that warns that airplanes cannot attack.
-a warning about the purchases are not allowed.

a message explaining the embark/disembark mechanic could be useful too.

the game run fast in

Windows XP
Processor
AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 2.93GHz
Ram 2GB
Video Card :NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT

the music is good but could be better (a major variety maybe?)

i have not seen the multiplayer but i expect a ladder system/support.

Installation was quick. I am very impressed at first blush. It has been a while since I have played PG, but you have to love a game that you can dive right into. It is very intuitive. The interface is very easy to deal with. The graphics are very good. The game runs very smoothly on my 5 year old XP machine. It definitely feels like a "one more turn" game.
