having a terrible time loading this game on windows 7
I read the sticky thread. I added the d3drm.dll file, it stopped giving me that error, but what its doing now is showing a window with a guage on it that says loading in several different languages but never gets passed that. It just stops responding from that point. I bought the game new off of amazon. Anyways, what to do now, I am at a loss?

Are you running the game in administrator and (perhaps) XP compatibility mode? Spartan was written well before Vista was thought of, let alone Windows 7, so might need those options to operate correctly, depending on your video card etc.
You will definitely need to run as Admin, as the game writes to files in the install folder.

Yeah, i tried it all, nothing seems to make it work and sadly for one reason or another xmode doesn't work on my particular copy of 7, they want me to upgrade to professional lol, love me some video games but not doing that.
Anyways, appreciate the time you took to respond, perhaps down the road ya'll will create another title that catches my interest as that one did!

So, I've installed it, uinstalled it, tried to run it from a seperate location, got the file needed it, put it in the game, put it in the system32 file. None of this makes it work, really appreciate the responses, guess I am just sending it back, this company makes games that i like the idea of, I'll have to wait for the next one.

Well, the d3drm file just needs to go into the same folder as the EXE (you'll get a specific error if it's not in the right place).
I would suggest trying running in a window, we might get at least more info on the problem. Go into the DATA folder in the game, and open the user.txt file. Add the lines:
FULLSCREEN 0
NOSOUND 1
(we'll turn off the sound too in case that is causing an issue). Then save the file and run the game.

Damn, this didn't work either. So, other people have said they run it on windows7, which leads me to believe its an issue with my system. Anyways, I am going to take it back today.
Any plans for a sandbox-ish 4x game in the ancient world type games coming in the future? I may check otu the napolean era game I saw here in the meantime.
That or I'll just continue to play GCII hehe

You may check Hegemony: Philipp of Macedon Gold. It covers more or less the same period as Spartan. It's a very good game done by an independant group. It's RTS thougth but easy to manage. The gold edition gives you the option to play any faction in sandbox (i think as i am still playing the campaign).
