Rear Support In Combat?

Post by gavril »

Hi all,

I've started playing again after a few months off, and I've been looking for info in the Wiki and the online guide about rear support for units in melee. I seem to remember hearing something about this in the past, but can't find any info on it. Something about one rear unit adding support to two units in its frontal hexes? I may have imagined it, or I may be going blind. Or mad. Or possibly all three :?

TIA for any light you can shed!

J

Not sure of the exact mechanisms but it is referanced in the rules under the cohesion test modifier section. basically a combat unit (not lights) directly behind a unit(s) in melee combat provides rear support. This is a +1 bonus if the front line unit loses a combat and must test to see if it drops a level of cohesion,. I dont believe there is much more to it than that.

I think TGM is correct, but I don't think Fragemented units provde rear support either.

Not sure, in the rules it states this:
+1 Adjacent friends other than skirmishers to their rear.

That would imply that skirmishes dont give support to other skirmishers

What i found interesting is this :

When cohesion tests happen?
 If skirmishers and adjacent friends rout.
 If adjacent friends, other than skirmishers, rout.
 An adjacent commander was killed.
 On receiving 2 or more hits from shooting.
Fragmented and charged by enemy other than light foot.
 On receiving more hits than inflicted in a melee or impact combat.

This appears to not be enabled ( if it was it would be in line w the TT where a fragged unit need s to test if charged and can rout PRIOR to contact......

Thanks for the replies - they've pointed me in the right direction in the online manual. So it's the cohesion tests that are affected... Now I know :D

Do mobs count as skirmishers or can you use these cheap troops to give you rear support bonuses?

No , you can use them in the rear for the benefit , although that IMHO should be changed. Cant see Agryspids etc being "boosted" by a a horde of camp followers behind them, if anything it should give the opposite effect, always reaching back with your fighting arm hand to check your wallet and all :)

And not just your wallet, given the (alleged) morals of your average camp follower. But probably best not to go there... ;O)
