Nah, Games that do that obviously are weak in terms of other elements

Contrevserial Games

Post by ste »

I read an article this weekend, about the top 10 most contreversial games out there, I was just wondering what everyone else thought about developing games almost purely to arouse contreversy, or anything in general about the games...

Here's the list incase anyone is interested:

10. Playboy: The Mansion
09. Night Trap
08. KingPin
07. Mortal Kombat
06. Solider Of Fortune
05. Carmageddon
04. Postal
03. Doom
02. Manhunt
01. Grand Theft Auto

I haven't played Playboy: the mansion but i guess it's rather harmless. Soft erotic games are not a problem in my view.

What i really don't like:

- Hard violence (gore..)
- Hard sexual

As I see it the only game that tried to do this was Manhunt, and as a game it kinda sucked from what I have heard.
All the above in that list were/are good games.
Why is night trap in that list? It was the first (as far as I remember) pc cdrom game and though it had lightly dressed women in fmv, there wasn't anything more, right?
Why aren't strategy games where you control nazi germany in that list?
Some people need to have some more sex me thinks. (the MPs/Senators etc that rise these things)
We have capitalism and democracy more or less. If people do not like or want to buy a game, they will not, what is the others problem? Is it because they cannot buy them or they suck at them?

I have never and never will buy a game because it is controversial, but that never stopped me for doing the opposite either. If a game is good or bad it doesn't depend on that. BUT, if a company makes a game just for that reason, and the game sucks, then no reason to buy it IMO.

From the above list I do not own or even played a demo of Playboy, Manhunt, Kingpin. Playboy I find it boring (if it was Hustler Mansion might be better), Manhunt from what I understand you murder people with a variety of non clean methods just so that the game is controversial, plus the reviews were less than good with it, not interested. Kingpin has a lot of swearing for no good reason (I still remember a great review on the american Computer Games Magazine (at the time it still had its second name) that put me off it.

Postal SUCKED. It was IMO a terrible game. Boring as nothing else at the time, if there wasn't any controversy about it I doubt anyone would know it.

The rest of the games are good to very good IMO that do not deserve to be ignored by gamers strictly because some beeps don't like their content.

Controversial

Post by honvedseg »

Nah, those aren't controversial, what about REALLY controversial games, like a First Person Shooter where you have to bash baby seals and collect furs, or a "roundup" game where you herd either Jews or Slavs into Nazi death camps, or a twisted NASCAR event where you get points for running over pedestrians...? I've actually heard of a couple of "shareware" games along similar lines to those, but I've changed the names and details to protect the guilty and depraved, and to make it harder to actually track down a copy the games.

Well, there was this game last year I think about murdering JFK. I was very curious (even BBC talked about it) and tried the demo. Disgusted, bored, and I wouldn't get the game even for 1p. Still, I am against stopping the selling of any games.

I think banning anything artistic is wrong, but then again, there probrably are exceptions to the rule...

GTA isn't a controversial game - it's an innovative marketing gimmik for a sex video!! :)
