New to FOG - 28mm Commander bases

Post by Gozza »

I apologise if this has been asked previously.
I have found during a search of this forum that commander bases are 40mm X 40mm, that's for 15mm figs, correct?

Then 28mm commander bases are 60mm X 60mm?

Regards,

Grant

Yes, that's correct although you can have shallower bases for commanders if you wish. Details are on page 126.

In fact my commanders are in 40x30mm bases (cavalry bases) as they are depicted as cavalry. In some extreme cases I can use my command bases as cavalry bases and the other way round. There is some flexibility regarding that.

Thanks for your responses.

Page 126, of course, Base Sizes.

I never cease to amaze myself how dopey I can be.

I have referred to that page numerous times in basing my troops but for some reason it didn't come to mind when I was looking into commander basing.

Definitely getting old.

Thanks again,

I have some 40mmx40mm bases with a 40x30 magnetic strip stuck on top. Then for FoG my generals (even foot elements!) can be mounted 40x40, whilst in DBx they remain as-is.

It's not so much that the larger bases is a slight advantage in FoG (I can't actually recall any time that actually made a difference, although I'm sure it must have from time to time). But rather that it does allow the estra flexibility of deploying the same bases as either general or troops in different games, and despite that makes it easy to see which bases are the generals in a given battle (the 40x40 base is brown rather than green).

For 28mm figures you can have larger than 60 x 60mm. For my chariot armies where the commander is in a chariot my commanders are on 60 x 80mm

I would have thoughts so but only under the (generals should be depicted as.'x'.. in the army list. If x is a chariot and chariots can be deeper than 60mm then the general shoudl be able to.

Page 127 has provisions allowing for larger base sizes.

Yes, but generals base sizes are specific to generals, not dependent on how they are depicted. So I wasn't sure if that provision extended to generals as well.

There's a definite potential advantage to having generals on bigger bases, and (unlike deeper bases for real troops) little disadvantage that I can see.

I guess it's one of those things that despite the problems it causes with the rules has to be allowed, because people *will* go and buy oversize figures, bless them ;)

That's not a problem, you could even turn it 90 degrees and pretend it is in column if you really wanted to ;)

Heh. and we're almost, but not quite, back to the "spot the Genesis lyrics" competition that was initiated a few days ago...
