Newcomer starting FoG and looking for advices

Post by Njall »

Hello there

Well.. as a newcomer here, I'm sure you'll guess I'm starting FoG (in fact I'm waiting for my books  ).

Thanks to a friend, I managed to have a look at the "Swords and cimitars" companion book, I'm thinking of starting a mamluk egyptian army and I have a question : I have some nice 28mm muslim heavy cavalry miniatures (sculpted by 2 brothers with a name starting by P and sold in a "First crusade muslim armies" range) : are they usable for that period or should I keep them for an earlier period ? I confess I'm totally new to that period (usually I'm more into nice blocks of german pikemen with coloured uniforms :P ).

So, any advices ?

Thanks by advance.

P.S. : btw, English is a foreign language for me so I hope you'll forgive any mistakes.

The answer is probably close enough to be acceptable.

Meaning the first Crusade and particular the early Mameluke period were not ones with massive shifts in islamic apparel or military equipment from a "grand scale" perspective. I am sure there are details that differ, but not enough to matter.

So welcome and enjoy.

I'd be a lot less keen on them as mamluks. The Perry figures are more "Arab" than "Turkish" and I don't really think are that suitable for the Turkish troops of the 1st Crusade, let along the mamluks

Njall, best solution is to forget the mamluks and instead play Field of Glory Rennaissance where you can have 'nice blocks of german pikemen with coloured uniforms' - and it's a better game... :)

Your English is fine - indeed its better than that of some of the natives you will find hereabout...

The Perry's have both Arabs and Turks. These look like reasonable ghilmen to me (except for lack of tied horse tails). I believe the shield is not cast on.

Well.. I thought of that solution but playing in another period could be fun too ;)

A new question juste arose in my mind : which scale (or size, I can't remember) would you advise : 28 mm or 15 mm ? Seems a lot of players prefer the 15 mm ?

It really depends upon what the people around you play most often. Where I am, all FoG and FoGR is 15mm (unless you count Nik...) so I play 15mm (and it is much cheaper) but there are some wonderful 25/28mm figures on the market.

15mm is more common generally, but it's more important to know what scale the people you're likely to play with have. Where are you based?

Ah, OK. There's a french speaking forum here - perhaps ask the french guys there what the common scale in france is - i think they are mostly 15mm
