Initial Feedback

Post by todwag »

My first impressions based on time frames suggested.

30s: I like the sepia color on the main menu. There should be sound.
5m: Unit movements need a movement animation instead of teleportation.
I like the transparent color overlay for unit movement; its very intuitive.
Screen scrolling i a little jerky. WASD should work by default.
15m: End Turn button needs tool tip.
I like the big combat prediction numbers. (better us and them would help)
An optional combat animation would be nice.
The pace seems perfect.
1h
Mouse wheel zoom is great but should zoom back to the focused unit.
Elite replacements button's tooltip doesn't say it's elite.
Mouse pan needs to be configurable, maybe bump equals arrow key one time kind of setting.
Enemy turn summary panel would be useful.
I can't find level of entrenchment values.
I like it very much. It is intuitive to start playing and fun. It looks and feels like PG
but not as immersive without vintage WW2 film sequences and flavorful mission descriptions.
I'm hoping for a a lot more WW2 feel and the tutorials should focus on explaning game
mechanics throughly. I know what to do in the tutorials but I like detailed technical
information explaning the best ways to do something.
- Performance.
Very fast no issues. Resolution and anti-alias setting are a must.
- Map graphics:
Terrain seemed good. The units are a little fuzzy; more detail is good. I like the graphics in Battlefield Academy.
- Usability and UI of the main screen.
Very easy to use. A list of shortcut keys and ability to configure is a must. The red slash is good for units without actions but an indicator of "able to shoot would be helpful". Also a visual clue as to which units are slept is useful. I can never get the Undo move button to have any affect. When my units cause no damage I can't tell if anything happen; a sound clue would be nice. An overlay for available artillery targets would be nice. Even the same one hex overlay for non-ranged units would be useful maybe when you hold down a key and hover the unit.
- Game rules.
Knowing the exact rules is the first step. Right now I'm just guessing.
- Tutorial campaign.
I seem to know what to do but I think tutorial should focus on how to best do things. Explanation of game mechanics is a must for tutorials.

Going to play some more. :D

All good points, I don't have anything specific to add, several items you've mentioned have been brought up already, but it's always good to hear more people mentioning the same issue (no sarcasm intended).

However, and I can't believe I never noticed this, but you're right about the elite button not saying elite, in some circumstances. It actually says elite when the button isn't usable, but drops the word 'elite' when it is relevant. I never caught it because I don't stop to read the tool tips (anymore) because they aren't instant. Reminds me of this request thread:

Air/Ground Toggle

Post by todwag »

After my air units attack ground units, I can't see how many of the enemy I killed. And in general the results of the last combat are only know if you saw how many were there before. I think a scrolling window somewhere showing a history of combat would be great.

First Impression

Post by Warhaven »

- First impressions. What were your impression after 30 seconds, 5 minutes, 15 minutes and an hour. If you could write these down and post them to the forum it would be very useful. Looks like a typical hex based game. Reminds me of the Panzer General series.

- Performance. Is the game too slow on your PC? If yes, what problems exactly you experience, and what system configuration do you have? Performs well in my PC.

- Map graphics: the terrain map and the units. What did you like or not like. What could be improved? Graphics look clean, easy to follow.

- Usability and UI of the main screen. Is it intuitively clear how to control the game? Is the UI convenient? Do you like the existing mouse interface, or would you prefer a different one? What useful information do you miss in the UI sidebar or the main map view? All interface looks simple enough. But I did get to look around for the end turn button since most games have it on the lower right. Time of Fury has it on the same location so finding it once familiar with the publishers games is no problem.

- Game rules. Please note that at this point game rules are not final. We are still thinking about some aspects, and we'll change and tweak some things as we test the game. However, any opinions on what you see in the game now, and what could be improved, are very much welcome. Got to play a bit more in order to suggest some minor adjustments, but would be interested to find out how to make synch, assaults.

- Tutorial campaign. The first beta includes the six tutorial scenarios from the tutorial campaign. Currently they have no real tutorial help but are just there to show the difficulty. It would be good if we knew which areas of the game needed the most helpers and prompts so can you tell us which parts you did not understand so we can focus on explaining those.
Crashed during the third stage of tutorial.
