Late scenarios of 1939 Campaign

Post by Kerensky »

Anyone have experience to share from these scenarios? Namely France and Sealion.
For me, I've found it impracticable to NOT lose at least one core unit per turn. Even when I've tried playing cautiously in the last few play throughs, when I lose a 2 star 7 strength infantry unit with entrenchment in a one shot engagement against a 10 strength no star attacking allied infantry unit, I just have to accept my core is going to sustain heavy losses.
I've even gone two turns in a row losing 3 core units per turn. That was particularly brutal, but still managed the decisive victory in the end.

Yet at the same time, I typically finish France somewhere between turn 9 and 11 of the total 22. I don't know what the cut off for Marginal Victory is, but I feel like I've never come close to having to worry about that.

Oh, and I typically enter Sealion scenario with 4000 prestige, minus maybe 1000 I spend to upgrade and overstrength. I suspect that's partly a reflection of my aversion to expensive units (No pioneers, artillery, air defense, level, and tactical bombers) and that I treat the elite reinforcement button like it has the plague.

Impossible setting for myself, but I am curious to hear how the other settings play out.

Turn 5 and after 5 more turns the scenario was over.

Core consists of
6 infantry units, 2 normal 4 HW
7 tanks, 6 IVD 1 IIIF
2 recon
3 ATG, two pzjager and 1 88 ATG(Bugged 88 as a single substitute for how effective artillery should be)
5 fighters, 2 two stars, 2 one stars, 1 no stars
1 ju 87

What kind of core make up do other people have?

I'll start a new campaign when the new beta is released, I've mostly played the Poland and Norway scenarios so can't comment on the later ones yet. As we have one less scenario to play than in regular PG, cores will be a bit weaker than in PG probably, also because PP's are more tight due to having to replace losses ourselves between battles.

I found the opposite to be true, my prestige was hovering between 3k and 5k after France, and never dropped below that. Impossible mode. As before, this could be attributed to my aversion to expensive units. My core at the end was:
7 infantry, 0 of which were pioneer.
8 armor, including one PZ IVJ 'command' tank I cheated to acquire.
2 recon
3 assault guns, including one Marder III (this unit actually proved to be detrimental because it would constantly run out of ammo and fall behind the rest of my units)
7 fighters
1 tactical bomber.

Other than the rude shock caused by the size of the Soviet air force on Barbarossa, all of the Russian scenarios were a breeze. Just rolled right over any resistance with 5 star elites and a few pieces of fodder.

Next time I'll try without the 'command' unit, and perhaps try starting from the 1941 start point.

In general teh difficult levels of the real missions are way way too hard. We need it to be a lot easier for most people.

We can either reduce the number of units the AI has, reduce its aggressiveness and activity, give the player more or a combination of all 3. Whatever we do we need to make the game much much easier on the lower difficulty settings!

Allied Reductions

Post by Easterner »

The non-Brit and Poles armies would best appear as 5's. Poles armor/air as 5's. French colonial and LE units normal 10's; Fr armor could be 10's but severely limited by fuel and ammo set to very low levels. Russ 5's for anything not a Guard/NKVD.

This would better reflect the Allies at the strategic levels who suffered various amounts of Morale, leadership, training and logistic issues in each nation. Poles had good Inf & Cav. Brits good at all levels except command issues. AI should be limited in air forces for West. Russ had lots of air, most bad.

AI shouldn't be disintegrating German units with single hits. Ger were very resilient.
