tournament balance

Post by bahdahbum »

Hy

I read here and there some questions about the balance of the game and would like to share some thoughts and have your enlighted opinion .

If there is to be any FOGR tournament in belgium ( january 2012 ) , I will have to organise it . it seems to me that the armies from Trade and treachery are will have to struggle in an open tournament - no way to do something else as there are not many players - . It also seem to me that up to now, all other armies are more or less balanced . Exotic armies are always welcome as it is the choice of the player . But what I fear are the european armies of the end of the period : full of muskets, bayonets and musketeers . it seems a bit too strongh for the other armies . I fear those armies will have a very big advantage due to their firepower and near immunity from mounted units .

Alas I cannot play often ( the armies are still in painting ) , so some help , some tought from more experienced players are welcome .

Because of the deployment and threatened flank rules, armies really do need mounted troops.

Although the late armies have the most cost effective infantry (1 pike 5 shot), none of the armies with the 1 pike, 5 shot (Musket) BGs have cavalry that is as good as that in the armies of the previous book, so they will tend to struggle a bit on the wings - at least sufficiently to compensate for their more efficient infantry.

The French cavalry is the best of the book, but their infantry have reduced firepower (Musket*) and their cavalry, although advantaged in the impact phase, may struggle against better armoured earlier cavalry in melee. The two late 17th century Louis XIV armies in the first Britcon beta tournament came bottom.

So I think that in fact the late armies will not dominate, though we cannot be sure until some tournaments including Duty & Glory have been run.

True, it will.
