FOG - Things Needed in Game

Post by Old_Warrior »

Putting together all of my ideas for a better game:

1. Larger maps. The cavalry armies in the game have a hard time winning because of the "Edge of Board-itis" - thus if done properly an infantry army can pin a cavalry army along the edge of the board and cause them to run right off if they must evade. I would guess that 5 hexes in either direction would help. Deeper board as well. Having the camp on the edge of the map is ok but sometimes the board edge seems a bit too close. 2 hexes should do it. Note: in choosing the map if it is open you cannot take advantage of the flank very often with a cavalry army vs. infantry - if the infantry lose the initiative isn't this a given that they could get outflanked?

2. Elephants - these went berserk as we all know and would run down enemy units too. They should take a scatter test and be allowed to run right through the enemy unit (if that direction is the outcome) and upgrade its morale state to the next worse level. Then they should rout off the map in the direction of their flight with any unit in the way also getting the morale hit.

3. Field fortifications - these are sadly missing or am I missing seeing where they are at?

4. Cavalry/elephants/chariots/camalry vs. Light Infantry - these would run right through these units - and continue on into units behind them. I see cavalry cause infantry to evade instead of being overrun with losses. It should be that it is a running battle at best. Not a free trip to the rear. And the combat was brief - not a "halt and fight" issue. Even the best trained light infantry would not halt the attack of a cavalry unit. Even without stirrups the cavalry still could scatter most light infantry or run them down.

Otherwise I really love the FOG game and modules. Hoping to see REN get its own FOG-REN game!

Hi.

I agree completely and would like to see some other features added.

Legion Triumphant:
- missing a Late Parthian Empire Army
- missing Marcomanni
- missing Nabatean Army
- missing Cataphracted Camels

FoG
- missing ability for leaders to rally units
- would be great to add video sequences for charging elephants etc...
Sic transit Gloria Mundi !

Totally agree with Demetrios here and want also to further the request for the addition of fortifications -- gulleys are a poor substitute -- and structures.

It's a good list you have but as for fortifications they are available (I just discovered this myself) in the DAG. I had expected they would be in the Scenario Editor. I doubt they are available for all armies in all modules but they are present and apparently have been since RoR.

Still learning here...

Are they in the Scenario Editor? Or Map Editor? You do not say where. Thanks for finding this out! And I hope that they are added to the rest of the modules soon.

Many armies (if not most) get fortifications. It's that little tab in the DAG lists just under the points total boxes in the upper right part of the display. They are pretty uselss though as you can only place them in your set up area and they don't move so are easily avoided. Most players regard them as a waste of points (much like they view artillery.)

Also, leaders do try to rally routed troups. It's an automatic part of the route phase and applies to anyone in a leader's command radius with extra points for quality and being adjacent, etc.

They are available for purchase in various Dag lists (like stakes ) Not sure which lists have them but Papal States , Gauls as well so it isnt expansion pack specific. They arnt very usefull in DAG battles though as they can only be deployed the same map edge distance as non lights......

They are not currently available to use in the editor , nor are camps and i feel after a whole year Slitherine really needs to make this happen....

edit: Deeter beat me to it...

However , if you could deploy fortifications AND artillery further up (same distance as lights??) both could be viable options for some lists...

Thanks for the info. Fortifications should be in the Scenario Editor and should be allowed for virtually all armies. Walls, palisades, stake-pits, etc. I am hoping that they add these in over the coming years. The sooner the better. I cannot understand the rationale for just a certain army. The Gauls used fortifications just as much as the Romans. And the Romans almost ALWAYS had an armed camp that they would use when fighting the Gauls. This is not the camp we have in the game. It was a small fort.
