Arab Conquest
Hi There
Thinking of starting the above army, whats the best sources for this period? Which figures would you think would cover this period?

I used the legio heroica figures - they paint up great in 15mm - taking them to IWF in NZ.david53 wrote:Hi There

For conquest period you need to be avoiding the "kite" shield types, just go for round shields.
For sources al-Tabari has to be the main original one - can't recall which volumes you'd need. Hugh Kennedy's "Armies of the Caliphates" is useful even for this period IIRC.

Though he has an incredibly tedious writing style if I remember correctly. Every time I opened this book I fell into a catatonic trance of boredom. Plenty of info though.nikgaukroger wrote: Hugh Kennedy's "Armies of the Caliphates" is useful even for this period IIRC.

I have an Arab army in 25mm with Old Glory figs. They are fine. I keep looking at the Artizan "moors" and thinking about doing another one. Those figures are gorgeous. Artizan sells round shields separately if you want to put round shields on everyone. They have a bit of a north african look to them even with that. Maybe more appropriate for Ummayads, ENAD, and ... Moors.
Thanks to the people for pointing me in the right direction. Sorry I should have said 15mm is what I play so its essex for infantry with round shields and spears.
I have been reading the book about Muhammad and his life by Yahiya Emerick an interesting read. It covers the early period which is what I want to cover. I'll check out the other sources but if anyone has any ideas of colours I know white was popular for Arab armies any other ideas?
Thanks for your help up to now.
