Hi guys, I have a question. I am a long time miniature gamer-American Civil War(15mm) the old Johnny Reb system. I am just now getting into Field of Glory Miniatures(15mm) My question is - What is the Scale?
How many yard/meters is one inch?
The lost of a stand/figure equals how many men lost?
Each turn equals how many minutes?
The game works because missile troops can cause as much damage to a battle group (unit) as they could in history before contact and each BG can cause damage in relation to that caused in history over the phases of battle. It is a top down view, not bottom up. If bottom up the ground and troop scales would have to be set. However
The ground scale is based on effective missile range at that point in history, roughly. But time scale is less precise, just following the ebb and flow of battle. The turns at the end of the game probably represent less 'time' than the turns at the start were the armies are jostling for position. Its more accurate than flames of war, but that isn't saying much. The figure scale could be taken as around 200 men for a base of Heavy foot, as a start point, but that would depend on the era represented, early armies contained lots more men, medieval lots less.
I would say the scales are all quite elastic to make a game that can work to a fashion as a reasonable representation over a time scale of over 4000 years.
Also a stand lost does not necessarily represent dead men, it represents the loss of fighting power as units are degraded through fatigue and casualties until they eventually lose so much they are no longer a viable fighting entity, where the unit breaks and is removed

putting the arg into argumentative, except for the lists I check where there is no argument!
Thanks for your response Phil. That answers my question. I am waiting on my Field of Glory rules book. Was wondering what the scale was but couldn't find the answer on the web.

A stand is about 256 men
Bow range is 6MU - which means that 1MU is about 50 paces (say 30 metres).
There's no time scale given, but a battle usually takes about a dozen moves to resolve, so each move must be at least 15 minutes.

a "MU" is what the game calls an inch or 25 mm.
Bow range is 6 inches = 150 mm, a stand of figures has a frontage of 40 mm if you are using 15 mm figures, or 60mm if you are using 25-28 mm figures. Troops normally fight in a depth of 2 stands. Hence a stand equals half of however many men normally fought on a frontage of 40 (or 60)/150 times the range of a bow. You can work it out from there. Battles are typically around 60-100 stands per side.
An MU is whatever you define it to be; the 25mm game plays better with a larger MU, for instance (although we find 40mm too big; we found 30mm a good compromise).
