failed break off leads to broken BG

Post by gozerius »

Last weekend I ran into this interesting situation. A fragmented BG of LH in contact with a BG of MF was forced to break off, but was blocked by another broken BG of LH (having just routed from melee with a BG of HCh). The fragmented BG dropped to broken and then routed (initial rout), bursting through the BG to its rear. The MF pursued and contacted the second BG of LH, ending its (initial) pursuit move in contact with broken enemy. Does the second LH BG lose a base before it routs in the JAP? Does the first BG rout as normal during the appropriate phase in the JAP?

P101 covers the base loss in initial pursuit. The MF have not remained in contact with the LH that routed from them, so do not inflict a base loss on the BG that they have now hit.

In the JAP the second LH BG routs directly away from the MF with a VMD (splitting the angle if anyone else is in contact) and will lose bases if any pursuers remain in contact. The orighnal LH will rout as normal, heading for the baseline presuming no other BG has contacted them.

Upon further study, I have found (p. 100) the proper outcome is the BG which broke due to failure to break off does not rout until the end of the JAP phase. Thus the question is moot.
