Installing Spartan broke custom messages in GoT

Post by Redpossum »

I can't find the thread now, but one of you guys from Slitherine posted that the way to create custom messages was to edit the localisation.txt file, and then run the executables found in the Mod Kit.

I had already figured this out for myself, and was pleased to see it confirmed as the "right" way to do things.

OK, all was well, I was using custom messages in a number of custom scenarios for GoT, all was joy and light.

Then I got my copy of Spartan, installed and patched it, and it broke all my custom messages in GoT, indeed everything I had done by editing localisation.txt files

I uninstalled Spartan, and all my custom messages in GoT worked again.

I was not editing the copy of localisation.txt in C:\Matrix Games\Gates Of Troy\data

I was editing a separate copy of localisation.txt for each mod, located in
C:\Matrix Games\Gates Of Troy\MOD\ModName\data

I understand that you do not support modding, and you'd be completely within your rights to tell me, "Sorry, but we can't help you with this".

However, any chance you might be generous enough to offer a solution here? :) :) :)

Basically Gates of Troy checks for an installation of Spartan and if it finds one reads the game text in from there. I started trying to explain why, but gave up as its all too complictaed & confusing!

All you need to go is copy your lang.str file from the Gates of Troy data dir to the Spartan dir & it should all work for you.

Errr, you mean copy it into the main /data dir in Spartan, replacing the original?

That sort of precludes having a different set of custom messages for each mod, doesn't it?

Or do you mean mirror the /mod/modname/data directory structure from GoT, and place the lang.str file in there?

Ah I see - its not something that's been tried. You could try replicating the MOD dir structure in Spartan & see if that works.

No joy. Replicating the mod directory structure under Spartan, with the custom lang.str files in a Spartan/Mod/modname/data directory for each does not work.

In order to have my custom messages work in GoT with Spartan installed, I have to replace the stock lang.str file in the main Spartan/data directory with the custom lang.str file.

This really, uhhhh, uhhhh, what word would you use as a polite substitute for "sucks" ?

Before I installed Spartan, I could have custom messages for each different mod, just by putting the relevant files in the C:\Matrix Games\Gates Of Troy\MOD\modname\data directory.

Perhaps the worst part of this is realising that if anybody with Spartan D/L'ed and tried my "Prince of Atlantis" mod for GoT, the custom messages didn't work at all, the scenario made no sense at all, and I looked like a total drooling idiot ;/

Damn, this is frustrating.

I have 3 or 4 more mods/scenarios for GoT ready to share with the community here, but I can't make them work like this :(

What do I do?

You could try renaming the lang.str in the Spartan data dir & see if that helps. If it can't find it it will probably use the correct one. Means Spartan wont work until you name it back though, but you can run the Spartan scenarios through Troy so you probably dont need it?
