MRR Romans at Zama

Post by TitusPullo »

Hi all so I'm theming my new MRR for the Battle of Zama... here's what i've come up with so far

Scipio Africanus (Inspired Commander) - 80
Massisina (Field Commander) - 50
Troop Commander - 35

1st Legion

4 x Velites - 20
4 x Hastati - 56
4 x Principe - 56
2 x Triarii - 32

2nd Legion

4 x Velites - 20
4 x Hastati - 56
4 x Principe - 56
2 x Triarii - 32

3rd Legion

4 x Velites - 20
4 x Hastati - 56
4 x Principe - 56
2 x Triarii - 32

So now I'm not sure what I should take. I'm thinking 4 bases of Roman Cavalry and maybe 4 bases of Numidian Cavalry? Thoughts? Keep in mind my Rise of Rome book is in the mail and I'm aiming for 800 or 900 points.

also... do you think superior legions are appropriate for Zama... i would think that at this point the legionaries in Scipio's army are vets and ready for action as shown by their ability to make lanes for the elephant that hannibal deployed at Zama

Zama in FoG scale (250-300 men per base) should be something like 6 times the 4-4-4-2 legion setup, all being superior.
That's way over 800 points so your approach seem to halve these numbers.

In that case, you'll need 4 bases Roman cavalry and 2x4 bases Numidian LH.
Perhaps you'll want to leave the approx. 10 bases Numidian foot in the camp as we do not hear something from them in the actual battle.
