Battle Group Formations

Post by petedalby »

I missed this first time around but Lance and I discussed this during our game last night.

Page 17. Troops must in general be in a rectangular..........and all files of equal depth.

Now files are distinct to ranks. So this seems to imply that an 8 base BG cannot be deployed in 3 ranks, as 2 of the files would contain 3 bases and 1 file would contain 2 bases.

So:

A C
ABC
ABC

It seems illogical that this formation should be illegal? Should it read rank and not file?

Or have we missed something?

It certainly is not intended to be illegal - we will need to look at the wording. It should be something similar to what is expressed in the section on expanding - only the last rank should have less files than the front rank.

I think its the in general that does it.

Doesn't it say as exceptions that if you have an odd number of bases you can have the rear rank uneven

It does - but only if there an odd number of bases. Clearly not the case with an 8 base BG.

But I'm encouraged by your replies - I couldn't believe this was what you intended.

A slight change in the wording will sort it out.

Cheers!

Not quite in 6.01 it says that if you have an odd number of bases the rear rank can have an odd number of bases.
This implies that a BG of six bases can't form two deep as the rear rank has an odd number of bases.
